Planet Earth just reached a milestone; there are now 7 billion people on the planet and the population is not shrinking. Most of these people need and use energy in almost all aspects of their daily life. Since the Industrial Revolution, we have relied upon traditional sources of energy – fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal – to meet these needs.
