Benton County, AR — Siloam Springs-based Simmons Foods will build in western Benton County between Decatur and Gentry a $300 million poultry processing complex that is expected to add 1,500 jobs. Company officials said they plan to begin operations at the new facility in 2019.

Employment related to the new complex could rise to 2,300 by 2022, the company noted in a statement issued Wednesday (Sept. 27) by the Arkansas Economic Development Commission.

“We’re thrilled to bring this project to our community and are grateful for the cooperation from the cities of Decatur and Gentry, local officials, Arkansas Economic Development Commission and the State of Arkansas,” Todd Simmons, CEO of Simmons Foods, noted in the statement. “This project positions us to continue meeting our customers’ needs.”

Company creating more than 160 new jobs at manufacturing facility

Columbia, SC — BorgWarner Inc., a global leader in clean and efficient technology solutions for combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles, is expanding its operations in Oconee County. The $71.9 million investment is projected to create more than 160 new jobs. This announcement represents the company’s third expansion since 2013.

As one of the top suppliers for the global automotive industry, BorgWarner operates 62 facilities in 17 countries, employing approximately 27,000 associates worldwide. With a diverse customer base, the company serves a variety of markets, including the passenger car and light truck, commercial vehicle, off-highway, construction and agricultural markets.

Local companies are growing fast, raising money, creating jobs
Denver, CO — Starting fast out of the gate for Denver Startup Week, the Denver Office of Economic Development (OED) and the Blackstone Entrepreneurs Network Colorado (BEN Colorado) announced their annual additions to the roster of “Denver Gazelles,” the city’s list of the rapidly growing firms here with both proven success and excellent potential in raising money and creating jobs.
The 2017 class, all technology companies, are CyberGRX, Evolve Vacation Rental Network, GoSpotCheck, PaySimple, and SynchHR.

$520 million expansion includes the addition of office operations and brings Volvo Cars' South Carolina investment to more than $1 billion 

Columbia, SC — Volvo Cars announced that it is investing an additional $520 million in its Berkeley County operations and creating 1,910 new jobs. This new commitment adds to the company's initial 2015 announcement and brings the collective total to more than $1 billion in investment and 3,900 jobs, respectively.
Under construction currently, Volvo Cars' Berkeley County manufacturing plant will be the global production home of the company's all-new S60 sedan, which is expected to roll off the assembly line next year. With this new investment, the company is planning to add an additional product line - the next generation XC90 - to its South Carolina operations in 2021.

Danville, VA — This will be Unison Ltd’s second manufacturing facility, firmly establishing Unison’s committed production capabilities in the USA.

The new factory in Danville, Virginia, is intended to support the activities of the plant in North Yorkshire, which has witnessed a considerable manufacturing growth that is expected to continue for the foreseeable future.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe recently announced that Unison Ltd will invest $5.2 million to establish its first U.S. manufacturing operation in the Cane Creek Centre Industrial Park, jointly owned by the City of Danville and Pittsylvania County.

Divina Water Celebrates Grand Opening of Idaho Falls Facility

Idaho Falls, ID — Divina Water celebrated the grand opening of their Idaho Falls bottled water company. The startup company, known for pioneering a new patented distillation technology, welcomed business leaders to tour their expanded 12,000 square foot facility in Idaho Falls.  They were recognized internationally last year after just six months in business, winning a silver medal in the Berkley Springs International Water Tasting competition.

“We are excited to welcome the community to see our developing operations as we prepare for a momentous 2018,” said Divinia co-founder Crosby Sedlmayr.

Twin Falls, ID — The Southern Idaho Economic Development Organization (SIEDO) received a Gold Excellence in Economic Development Award for its “12 Cool Things” project, in the Special Purpose Print Promotion category from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). The award was accepted by Jeff McCurdy, SIEDO Executive Board Treasurer and city of Rupert Financial Officer, during the IEDC Annual Conference, held Sept. 17 - 20, in Toronto, Ontario.

“It was an honor to receive this award among our national and international peers and to showcase the creative ways we are communicating Southern Idaho's message nationally and across the globe," said McCurdy.

Company will build an initial 247,000-square-foot headquarters building on new campus
Little Rock, AR — George Gleason, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Bank of the Ozarks, joined Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson and Little Rock Mayor Mark Stodola in the Governor’s Conference Room at the State Capitol to formally announce the bank’s plans to build a new 247,000-square-foot corporate headquarters building in Little Rock. The bank has acquired a 44-acre site at The Ranch located on Highway 10 in west Little Rock for initial development and future expansion, as needed over time, for its corporate headquarters campus to support the bank’s continued growth. Bank of the Ozarks expects to break ground for the initial building before year-end 2017.  Approximately 500 employees are expected to move into the building when construction is completed in late 2019 or early 2020, with capacity to accommodate 800 to 900 employees.

August trade heats up in Brunswick, Savannah

Autos up 15 percent, containers up 5 percent

Savannah, GA — Auto and container volumes at the U.S. Southeast's busiest ports in Brunswick and Savannah experienced impressive growth in the month of August.
Colonel's Island Terminal in Brunswick moved 53,675 units of roll-on/roll off cargo, an increase of 7,109 or 15.3 percent more than August last year.
In its busiest August on record and the Authority's second busiest month ever for container trade, Savannah handled 348,297 twenty-foot equivalent container units, an increase of 5.3 percent or 17,591 TEUs compared to the same month a year ago.

Survey Peeks into the Minds of the C-Suite on Corporate Relocation and Expansion

New York, NY -- New survey of U.S. business executives concludes corporate decision makers are more likely to consider expansion in the United States than overseas options under the Trump administration. Released at the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) Annual Conference in Toronto, the study shows 33 percent of the corporate executives were more likely to explore domestic expansion under President Donald Trump vs. 10 percent that would explore international expansion. A majority of executives surveyed, 57 percent, reported the Trump presidency has not impacted their investment plans.


Conducted by Development Counsellors International (DCI) every three years, the “Winning Strategies in Economic Development Marketing: A View from Corporate America” survey has tracked trends in economic development since its inception in 1996. For the first time, the survey also includes findings about how the current political climate affects business perceptions.

Midland, Texas — Weir Oil & Gas, a leading supplier of equipment and services to the oil and gas sector, has agreed to build a new multi-million dollar facility in Midland, securing nearly 100 jobs over the next five years. Still pending the Midland City Council’s approval, the agreement negotiated by Midland’s Economic Development Corporation will include $1.8 million of forgivable loans payable to Weir over the next 5 years.  The investment is contingent upon Weir investing nearly $30 million in a new facility, related equipment and inventory in the City of Midland by 2019, and total employee salary and benefit payments of $6 million per year.

Toronto, ON — The Valdosta-Lowndes County Development Authority was recognized last night as one of the top 25 digital economic development organizations (EDOs) in North America at the 2017 International Economic Development Council (IEDC) Annual Conference. The annual Digital 25 reflects those organizations that best use digital technology to differentiate their communities online, and to better serve businesses.
The recognition comes from Community Systems, a company that develops websites and software to foster economic growth and tourism in communities across the world. The Digital 25 recognition is based on results from an annual survey of over 400 EDOs, analyzing how they use digital technology to drive growth and support community businesses.

New Orleans, LA -- The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) hosted their Annual Meeting in New Orleans yesterday (Roosevelt Hotel). The President of NASDA and Commissioner of Louisiana’s Department of Agriculture and Forestry, Dr. Michael Strain championed a motion supporting the deepening of the Mississippi River Ship Channel to 50 feet. Earlier in the week, Dr. Strain led the effort to gain the support of the Southern Association of State Departments of Agriculture (SASDA) on the same motion.

Talladega, AL — Georgia-Pacific announced plans to construct a $100 million lumber production facility in Talladega that will employ more than 100 full-time employees and generate an annual payroll estimated at $5 million.

Construction on the technologically advanced, 300,000-square-foot plant is scheduled to begin immediately, with an anticipated startup in late 2018.

“The availability of talent and natural resources make Talladega an ideal site for this new lumber production facility,” said Fritz Mason, vice president and general manager, Georgia-Pacific Lumber.

“The City of Talladega, Talladega County, and the State of Alabama have been incredibly supportive of this new venture, and we look forward to a long and beneficial relationship,” he added.

Dayton, OH -- NDC Technologies’ new Huber Heights headquarters means an additional 42 jobs for the Dayton region and an opportunity for some of its employees to make a big move to Ohio.

In early 2017, the company announced it would move its headquarters from Irwindale, California, to Huber Heights in a key decision designed to consolidate production and administrative functions. Relocation of its headquarters was one of several initiatives the company undertook in 2017 to grow its capabilities in the markets it serves. In order to expand, NDC officials had to look for a place with a more competitive business climate, a lower cost of living, and better proximity to its manufacturing partners and customers.

Idaho Small Business Fin Fun Mermaid is Honored by U.S. Senator Jim Risch with Congressional Record

Idaho Falls, ID -- Fin Fun Mermaid, a company that produces mermaid swimsuits, fin tails, swimwear and other products, was recently honored by Idaho’s U.S. Senator Jim Risch with a piece of the congressional record in recognition of being named “Small Business of The Year” and for their astounding growth.

In three years, Fin Fun has experienced 3,000 percent growth according to Idaho Department of Commerce.  CEO Eric Browning and CFO Steve Browning were named Idaho’s “Small Business Persons of the Year” by the U.S. Small Business Administration in April.  The following month, Risch named Fin Fun the small business of the month.  A piece of the congressional record was presented to Fin Fun September 4 in recognition of these achievements.

Mandatory evacuation for some areas to begin Saturday

State of Georgia — Following a recommendation from Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS) officials and local Emergency Management Agencies, Gov. Nathan Deal is expanding his emergency declaration to include 24 additional counties, with a total of 30 counties now included in a state of emergency. Deal also issued a mandatory evacuation order for all areas east of I-95, all of Chatham County and some areas west of I-95 that could be impacted by potential storm surge from Hurricane Irma. The executive order also authorized up to 5,000 Georgia National Guard members to be on state active duty to support Hurricane Irma response and recovery. The state of emergency prohibits price gouging for all goods and services related to the storm. Read the executive order here.
“The state is mobilizing all available resources to ensure public safety ahead of Hurricane Irma,” said Deal. “I encourage all Georgians in our coastal areas that could be impacted by this storm to evacuate the area as soon as possible.

Company creating more than 110 jobs at Farrow Road facility
Columbia, SC — Charter NEX Films is locating new specialty film manufacturing operations in Richland County. The project is expected to bring $85 million of capital investment and lead to the creation of more than 110 new jobs.

Corpus Christi, TX — The Port of Corpus Christi Authority (PCCA) Commission at a special meeting Friday, approved a Project Partnership Agreement (PPA) with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for the deepening and widening of the Corpus Christi Ship Channel (CC Ship Channel). The CC Ship Channel Improvement Project (CIP) will widen the CC Ship Channel to 530 feet plus additional barge shelves to allow for two way vessel and barge traffic in tandem, and deepen the CC Ship Channel to 54 feet MLLW (Mean Lower Low Water) to allow for safe passage of deep draft large vessels.
Upon the execution of the PPA, Port Commissioners also approved the acceleration of $32 million in Port funds to the USACE to expedite initial construction phases of the Project.

Freeport, TX — Port Freeport at Port Condition RECOVERY. The Captain of the Port Sector Houston-Galveston of the United States Coast Guard is permitting the Freeport Harbor Channel to open for vessel transits starting 7:00 a.m. on August 31, 2017. Vessel transits will be daylight restricted and limited to vessels with draft of 33 feet or less until further notice. Surveys by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are currently underway to confirm deeper drafting vessels can safely enter the channel and proceed to their designated berths.
Port Freeport Gates 4, 8 and 14 are open. The public terminal is in normal operating condition and the roads accessing the Port are generally passable. Please visit and for the most up-to-date road and bridge closures. The Port Freeport administration building will remain closed until Tuesday, September 5.

Corpus Christi, TX -- The United States Coast Guard Captain of the Port signed Marine Safety Information Bulletin authorizing the restricted opening of the Corpus Christi Sip Channel after a record six-day closure from the impacts of Hurricane Harvey. This opening will allow the seven local refineries to startup operations in an effort to serve the already short transportation fuels markets in the region and the nation.

The CC Ship Channel restrictions are:

  • One-way vessel movements
  • Daylight-only transits
  • Moving in convoy with 2-pilots per vessel
  • Draft restrictions of 43ft

As the Corpus Christi Ship Channels re-opens, the Aransas-Corpus Christi Pilots plan to start sailing the first vessel convoy at 1700 hrs. The Port’s Harbor Masters Office in concert with Industry to prioritize the more than 20 vessels currently awaiting berth assignments.
