Infrastructure expanding to handle new business

Savannah, GA — The Port of Savannah moved 4.35 million twenty-foot equivalent container units in Calendar Year 2018, its highest annual volume ever, and a 7.5 percent increase over 2017, according to a report from Georgia Ports Authority Executive Director Griff Lynch to the GPA Board Tuesday.
"The level of business Georgia has captured is a testament to the world-class service provided by our stevedores, ILA, pilots, other port stakeholders, and our partners at Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection," said GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch. "Georgia's unrivaled connectivity to Atlanta, Memphis, Charlotte and beyond allows port customers to reach new and growing markets."

Chattanooga chosen as company’s U.S. base for electric vehicle production

Nashville, TN — Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam and Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Bob Rolfe along with Volkswagen AG announced that Chattanooga will be home to the company’s first electric vehicle manufacturing facility in North America.

The project represents an investment of $800 million by Volkswagen and the creation of 1,000 jobs in Hamilton County.

“The shift toward electric vehicles is a trend that can be seen worldwide, and Volkswagen’s decision to locate its first North American EV manufacturing facility in Chattanooga underscores Tennessee’s manufacturing strength and highly-skilled workforce,” Haslam said. “As one of Hamilton County’s top employers, these additional 1,000 jobs will have a lasting impact on the region. I thank Volkswagen for its partnership and also applaud the company for its ongoing commitment to education and workforce alignment, which helps Tennessee build a pipeline of talent for years to come.”

Energy fabrication company to expand oil and gas, processing industry services through $2.5 million capital investment

Delcambre, LA — Governor John Bel Edwards and Bagwell Energy Services CEO Rodger Bagwell announced the company will create 150 new jobs in the next five years and make a $2.5 million capital investment at its Port of Delcambre fabrication center in Iberia Parish.

Bagwell Energy Services is situated on the Iberia Parish side of the Twin Parish Port District of Iberia and Vermilion parishes, also known as the Port of Delcambre. There, Bagwell Energy is expanding its services to the chemical manufacturing and liquefied natural gas processing industries, as well as serving its offshore and onshore oil and gas customers.

Through the expansion project, Bagwell Energy’s $2.5 million capital investment will add precision fabrication equipment for process industry piping and vessels, install new bridge cranes, and build a 15,000-square-foot addition to its fabrication center and a 4,000-square-foot addition to its painting-and-blasting facility. The project will retain 46 existing jobs while creating 150 new direct jobs with an average annual salary of $74,000, plus benefits. In addition, Louisiana Economic Development estimates the project will result in 240 new indirect jobs, for a total of 390 new jobs in Acadiana and surrounding regions.

Smyth County Machine, LLC to invest $2.1 million to expand manufacturing operation

Atkins, VA — Governor Ralph Northam announced that Smyth County Machine, LLC, a full service machining and fabrication facility, will invest $2.1 million to add equipment and expand its product line in Smyth County. Virginia successfully competed against Tennessee for the project, which will create 35 new jobs.

“Smyth County Machine has been creating jobs and stimulating the economy of Southwest Virginia for more than 40 years, helping make this region a hub for the Commonwealth’s manufacturing industry,” said Governor Northam. “We are pleased that this homegrown company has decided to expand and add new jobs in Smyth County, which will provide opportunity for our skilled workforce and result in a significant local economic impact.”

Indianapolis, IN — Indiana Governor Eric J. Holcomb and Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett joined executives from Kerauno, a communications workflow software company, as the company announced plans to expand its operations here, selecting Indianapolis to serve as its official headquarters as the scaleup continues to grow. With this expansion, Kerauno plans to increase its Indiana team up to 140 by 2022.
“Central Indiana’s tech community just keeps thriving with an impressive number of tech companies, like Kerauno, choosing to expand operations and continue to grow in our state,” said Gov. Holcomb. “Through our commitment to building a skilled workforce and our business-friendly environment, we continue cultivating opportunities for innovation and growth in Indiana.”

Beloit, WI — Seal-Rite Door has announced plans to relocate operations from Rockford, Illinois, to Beloit, where it will open and operate a state-of-the-art facility.

The 105,000-square-foot operation in Rock County’s 28-acre Wisconsin Stateline Industrial Park will house the rapidly growing company’s design and manufacturing operations for its high-performance residential doors, which include the ThermaTru line. The new complex will offer the latest equipment for increasing efficiency and improving overall production to position the company for future growth—capabilities unavailable at its current manufacturing site.

Seal-Rite, a subsidiary of Palmer-Donavin Manufacturing Co., is expected to bring 84 jobs to Wisconsin as part the $16 million expansion plan, which was supported by an award from WEDC of up to $250,000 in state tax credits over the next three years. The actual amount of credits the company will receive is contingent upon the number of jobs created during that period.

Newton, KS — Through regional efforts, Harvey County Economic Development and the Greater Wichita Partnership worked with the Kansas Department of Commerce to assist Weatherly Aircraft Company in locating their headquarters and assembly operations to a 26,000 sq. ft. facility at the Newton City-County airport.

Weatherly Aircraft Company is an American agricultural aircraft manufacturer of planes designed for small grain farming. The company plans to add about 109 jobs in the next five years and invest over $1 million in capital investment. 

Gary Beck, General Manager for Weatherly said, “As a first move to make Weatherly Aircraft Company’s new home in Kansas, we have selected hangar space at the Newton City-County Airport as an assembly facility for our model 620-B plane.  We appreciate the support we have been provided and will begin production within the first quarter of 2019.”

Lansing, MI — Three business expansions and two community revitalization projects that will generate a total of $17.7 million in private investment and create 173 jobs have received Michigan Strategic Fund support, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation announced.

“These projects will lead to new business growth, revitalized communities and more and better jobs for our residents. We’re pleased to work with our local partners and support these investments,” said Jeff Mason, CEO, Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the state’s chief marketing and business attraction arm that administers programs and performs due diligence on behalf of the MSF.

“The decision by these companies to expand in Michigan means good jobs for our residents and demonstrates the strength of our state’s talented workforce,” Mason said

Topeka, KS – Park Aerospace Technologies Corporation announced that it will be undergoing a massive expansion in Kansas.

At a special joint meeting Monday, the Newton City Commission and Harvey County Commission approved a development agreement with Park for a $19 million expansion.

The expansion will allow Park to double its number of employees, with plans to go from the current 73 employees to 146 in the next five years. The company intends to build a new 90,000 square-foot facility in order to accommodate the increased workforce, as well as to create more production space.

  • Company adding nonstop service to two new cities
  • Location key to company’s strategic growth

Lansing, MI — Allegiant Air, LLC, a provider of nonstop air service to 120 popular destinations in the United States, plans to expand its operations at Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation announced.

The project is expected to generate a total capital investment of more than $42.8 million and create at least 66 permanent jobs, resulting in a $200,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund. Michigan was chosen over competing airports in several other states.

Leader in cancer treatment will also have R&D, manufacturing in new Rockville facility, will create 170 jobs

Baltimore, MD — Maryland joined with Montgomery County to announce support for the new U.S. headquarters of Autolus, a U.K.-based biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering and developing treatments for cancer. The company plans to create approximately 170 new jobs by 2021. A leader in T-cell programming and manufacturing technology, the company will also have research and development and manufacturing operations in Rockville.

“Autolus is delighted to base its U.S. headquarters in Montgomery County, Maryland. With its educated and diverse workforce and proximity to world-class research facilities and universities, Montgomery County was the natural choice for us to base our U.S. hub,” said Matthias Alder, senior vice president and chief business officer of Autolus.

Minnesota-based financial services company expects to create 180 jobs over three years

Madison, WI — EQ, a Minnesota-based financial services and corporate services company, is establishing operations in Milwaukee—a project expected to create 180 jobs on the city’s northwest side.

The company, established in 1929, provides a range of transfer agent services that enable clients to manage share registers, communicate with shareowners and undertake significant corporate actions—simply and effectively. Formerly known as Wells Fargo Shareowner Services, EQ is part of an international organization that services 23 million shareholders and more than 1,200 clients worldwide.

The firm announces the early 2019 opening of their eighth office in Chaffee Crossing at One McClure Place, 8101 McClure Drive, Fort Smith, Ark.
One McClure Place developer ERC courted Crafton Tull for the available space because ERC and many other organizations, including Fort Chaffee Redevelopment authority and city of Fort Smith, work with the firm regularly. Cobb County, GA — Governor Nathan Deal announced that BioIQ, a health IT company, will create 500 jobs and invest more than $5 million in Cobb County through the location of its new headquarters. New jobs will include positions in technology, sales and operations.

Microsoft investment and expansion will create more than 100 new jobs

Richmond, VA — Governor Ralph Northam announced that Microsoft Corporation, one of the largest and most influential companies in the world, will inject significant capital investment to expand its enterprise data center in Mecklenburg County. The project is Microsoft’s sixth expansion at the facility since 2010 and will allow the company to further enhance its ability to serve customers in the U.S. and across the globe. Virginia successfully competed against multiple states for this significant investment, which will create more than 100 new jobs.

“When Microsoft established its new enterprise data center in 2010, it represented the largest economic investment in southern Virginia history, and we have been thrilled to see the company continue expanding in the Commonwealth ever since,” said Governor Northam. “Microsoft’s sustained investment in Virginia has created hundreds of new jobs for our citizens and advanced our position as a leader in information technology. Nashville-based manufacturer investing $9 million, creating 70 jobs

Nashville, TN — Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Bob Rolfe and Military Systems Group, Inc. (MSG) officials announced that the Nashville-based manufacturer will expand its operations in Davidson County and anticipates creating 70 new jobs during the next five years.

“The strength of Middle Tennessee’s robust economy is built around companies like MSG,” Rolfe said. “We look forward to the benefits these new high-quality jobs will have for residents in Davidson County.”

Founded in 1977 to manufacture the legendary .50 caliber machine gun, MSG now designs and manufactures specialty weapons mounting systems for various U.S. national defense programs. The company caters primarily to the U.S. Government and also supports U.S. partners and allies around the globe.

Joint venture with SABIC would result in 75 new direct jobs, estimated 350 new indirect jobs

Baton Rouge, LA — Governor John Bel Edwards and South Louisiana Methanol CEO Paul Moore announced the company plans to pursue a $2.2 billion capital investment in a new methanol complex in St. James Parish. Preliminary work on the project began last year at a 1,500-acre Mississippi River site. South Louisiana Methanol could begin formal construction later this year subject to successful negotiations with a new joint venture partner, a Houston-based subsidiary of Saudi Arabia-based SABIC.

Through the project, South Louisiana Methanol and SABIC would create one of the world’s largest methanol production sites. Originally announced in 2013 as a project of Texas-based ZEEP Inc. and New Zealand-based Todd Corporation, South Louisiana Methanol is now majority-owned by Todd Corporation and will pursue the joint-venture methanol project with SABIC.

Manufacturers, service and tech companies in 2018 announced plans to create 14,500 full-time jobs

Frankfort, KY — Companies pledged nearly $5.3 billion in expansions and new facility locations throughout Kentucky this year, making 2018 the second-highest in state history for corporate investment, Governor Matt Bevin announced.

From those investments spanning 374 individual projects, businesses plan to create more than 14,500 full-time jobs in the coming years. The state’s 2018 performance brings the Bevin administration total to $18.1 billion in announced investment and 50,745 jobs announced, more than any previous four-year administration in Kentucky.

McDonough, GA — The Henry County Development Authority announced that GFA, a premier provider of total logistics solutions and supply chain analysis, has located in Henry County to provide enhanced logistics solutions for LG Electronics.  The company is creating 34 new jobs at their new facility in Greenwood Industrial Park (McDonough, Georgia) to support their client.

GFA, headquartered in Valley, Alabama, fulfills its mission by providing innovative solutions and supply chain analysis that fit their customers’ needs.  The company’s 300,000 sf McDonough facility will distribute a wide array of LG Electronics products.
