Clinton County Port Authority Recognized for Best Project 

Wilmington, OH -- The Ohio Economic Development Association (OEDA) presented its Annual Excellence Awards at its 2019 Annual Summit, held at the Embassy Suites Columbus-Dublin.

The Ohio Economic Development Association’s Annual Excellence Awards program recognizes the achievements of individuals and organizations throughout Ohio in the areas of economic and workforce development.  

“The Annual Excellence Awards showcase the best of the best in economic development and gives members of the profession the opportunity to come together and collectively celebrate the success of the economic development profession,” Jennifer Price, OEDA Executive Director, said. 

The Clinton County Port Authority (CCPA) received an award from the OEDA in the category of Best Project. The project submission highlighted the return of Air Cargo Operations to the Wilmington Air Park, via the Amazon Air air cargo operation that began operation in late June of this year.  

The OEDA uses this award to recognize recent outstanding and innovative projects (retention, attraction, redevelopment [brownfield or historic], greenfield infrastructure, Main Street) in economic and business development that retain or generate jobs and capital investment.  

“Bringing scheduled air cargo operations back to the Wilmington Air Park was a genuine community effort,” said CCPA Executive Director Dan Evers. “It required the active engagement of local public and private sector organizations as well as elected and appointed leaders, and they all delivered to make this opportunity a reality for our community.”

The award determination is not dependent on the number of jobs created or retained, size of site, or the amount of total investment.  Rather, this award will showcase a unique approach to the project, which can include a public-private partnership, local collaboration, innovative financing and/or incentives, overcoming historic barriers or obstacles, or been a catalyst for economic development in the community.

As noted in the submission, this project was uniquely suited for this location.  Along with the local partnerships that were critical to achieving success, this effort was well supported by the community’s regional and state economic development partners The Dayton Development Coalition and JobsOhio, as well as elected officials throughout the State. CCPA officials expressed specific thanks to State Senator Bob Peterson and State Representative Shane Wilkin. 

“We truly appreciate the support of our partners for listening, for reacting quickly and for providing the technical and logistical support – often at a moment’s notice – that was critical to the success of this multi-faceted effort,” added Evers. 

The OEDA Awards Luncheon highlighted excellence in other award categories as well, including Excellence in Marketing and Communications, Excellence in Innovation, Excellence in Workforce Development, Economic Development Rookie of the Year and Economic Development Professional of the Year. 

“We were delighted that Dan Evers was recognized as a finalist in the category of Economic Development Professional of the Year,” said CCPA Board Chair Walt Rowsey. “We know the effort that has gone into the many projects in the last year, and to be recognized by those at the top of the profession across the State, is certainly something special.” 

Additionally, the OEDA recognized its second class Ohio Certified Economic Developers at the Awards Luncheon. The class of eleven completed coursework and Capstone projects meeting the established standards for the OhioCED Certification. The OhioCED credential is recognized state-wide.

Clinton County Port Authority Associate Director Beth Huber was a member of this second class of graduates from the newly established professional certification program. 

“The OEDA established this program to promote a best-practices baseline for Economic Development professionals in Ohio,” said Evers, who was a member of the OEDA Board of Directors during the development of this Certification. “The classroom and project work expose students to several facets of economic development, and require candidates to demonstrate proficiency through a “hands on” capstone project. It speaks volumes about Beth that she was able to achieve this certification. Her course work is already adding value to our county-wide economic development efforts.”

West Jefferson, OH -- Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Jefferson Industries Corporation (JIC) officials announced the company’s plans to expand its facility in West Jefferson, Ohio, creating 150 new jobs and investing $10.8 million. The Japanese auto supplier is a global manufacturer of automotive body frames. The news comes as Governor DeWine is visiting Saitama, Ohio’s sister state in Japan and home to Jefferson Industries’ world headquarters, alongside officials from JobsOhio and Columbus 2020.

“Jefferson Industries’ expansion brings new jobs at a cutting-edge automotive parts facility in the Columbus Region, boosting growth for both the company and Central Ohio,” said Governor DeWine. “JobsOhio and its partners continue to attract globally successful Japanese companies like Jefferson Industries that are prospering with Ohio talent.”

Cincinnati, OH -- Bon Secours Mercy Health announced that it intends to expand its presence at its City of Cincinnati hub in Bond Hill by creating 500 jobs and $50 million in new payroll. The Bond Hill office has, and will continue to house, the majority of the ministry’s shared services and a substantial amount of the ministry’s executive team.

REDI Cincinnati and JobsOhio partner to fuel company growth in Ohio

Cincinnati, OH -- Health management software company AssureCare announced that it would expand its headquarters to accommodate significant growth in its client-base and product offerings. Columbus, Ohio – PowerBuilt Material Handling Solutions LLC, an automotive component and material manufacturer, has announced plans to expand its facility in Bellefontaine, Ohio, creating 18 new jobs and investing $2 million. Hiring for machining and fabrication, assembly, engineering and project management positions is already under way.

PowerBuilt’s existing headquarters at 230 Reynolds Avenue in Bellefontaine has been in production for nearly 20 years and currently employs 25 employees. The company’s investment will be used to expand into a new 52,399-square-foot facility at 2250 South Main Street in Bellefontaine. The building will undergo a series of renovations and add capacity for research and development, robotic equipment testing, assembly, in-house fabrication and expanded product offerings.

Hiring will begin in Q3 and Q4 of 2019.

DuPont’s existing facility at 800 DuPont Road in Circleville has been in production for more than 60 years and currently employs 500 employees. The company’s investment will be used for machinery and equipment as well as construction costs to significantly expand its DuPont™ Kapton® film production capabilities. With the increased demand in its Electronics & Imaging business, this expansion will allow DuPont to further advance its plant and competitive offerings.

Deice Infrastructure a Priority Project

PDAC List Includes Recommendation for Wilmington Air Park

Wilmington, OH -- A proposed project to enhance the ability of the Wilmington Air Park to handle and process aircraft deice fluids is one of the top 23 Priority projects for the Dayton Region Priority Development and Advocacy Committee (PDAC). 

The list, released last week, is the result of reviewing nearly 50 project submissions from the 14-county Dayton region in five categories. 

“The Wilmington Air Park continues to see significant opportunities for employment growth,” said Dan Evers, Executive Director of the Clinton County Port Authority. “Nearly all space within the Air Park is leased, and this project proposes infrastructure investment that will allow for an operational and technological expansion necessary to enable larger-scale cold-weather operations at the airport.”

Columbus, OH — Gap Inc., a leading global retailer offering clothing, accessories and personal care products, has announced plans to expand its operations in Groveport, Ohio, investing approximately $100 million and creating 600 new jobs. Hiring for merchandise handlers and management positions will begin in Q1 and Q2 of 2020.

Gap Inc. will construct a new 420,000-square-foot warehouse adjacent to its existing 950,000-square-foot facility at 6001 Green Point Drive in Groveport. This additional space will allow the company to significantly increase daily output to support its growing online business.

140,700 Square Feet Leased to Two Companies

Wilmington, OH -- The Clinton County Port Authority (Port Authority) Board of Directors recently approved three facility leases representing nearly 140,700 square feet of space in three buildings at the Wilmington Air Park.

“These leases are with businesses currently at the Air Park,” said Dan Evers, Executive Director of the Clinton County Port Authority. “Their businesses are growing, and we are glad to accommodate that.”

Airborne Maintenance and Engineering Services (AMES), a division of Air Transport Services Group (ATSG) has leased over 15,000 square feet in the building immediately adjacent to the newest hangar. The Port Authority and AMES are working together to complete some building upgrades and modifications to support their expected operations.

Dynamic new shop/Makerspace at CSU made possible thanks to a partnership with The Austin Company

Cleveland, OH -- Cleveland State University has opened a new state-of-the-art, hands-on, woodshop within The Dan T. Moore Makerspace at the Washkewicz College of Engineering. The facility, made possible through a collaboration between The Austin Company and CSU will contain teaching space, multiple pieces of woodworking equipment and an advanced Shopbot, a 3-axis CNC machine for fabricating wood, plastic and aluminum.  

In recognition of The Austin Company’s support in making the facility possible, CSU is pleased to announce the new woodshop will be named the Samuel Austin Woodshop (SAW), after company founder, Samuel Austin. The SAW will provide CSU students with maker-based learning opportunities through hands-on workshops, industry expertise and student projects.

Wilmington, OH — The Wilmington Air Park has once again earned its Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 139 Certification, affirming that the airport facilities, infrastructure, staffing, and operations protocols are on par with other large airports around the country.
Airport operating certificates serve to ensure safety in airport transportation. An airport, in order to secure this certification from the FAA, must implement and maintain a significant level of operational and safety standards and provide for such things as on-site firefighting and rescue equipment and personnel.  

“This certification is important to maintain for both our current and future aviation tenants,” said Dan Evers, Executive Director of the Clinton County Port Authority. “It confirms a high level of readiness, best practices, and aviation infrastructure for airlines that would be considering operations at the Wilmington Air Park.”

Columbus, OH – Cintas Corporation – a leading supplier of corporate identity uniform programs, promotional products, restroom supplies, first aid, fire safety products and services, and industrial carpet and tile cleaning – announced plans to invest $10.4 million in a new distribution center in Groveport, OH. The company will lease 217,000 square feet to create its first free-standing distribution center in 10 years. Cintas will add 69 jobs in picking, shipping and office operations. Columbus, OH – PharmaForce Inc., a privately held pharmaceutical R&D and manufacturing company, will expand two of its existing facilities in the Columbus Region, investing approximately $145 million and creating 80 new jobs. Construction and remodeling will commence in 2018, with hiring for packaging, mechanical, sterile, quality assurance and validation beginning in Q1 and late 2018 for the New Albany and Hilliard facilities respectively.

“Our operations in New Albany and Hilliard have played a critical role in the growth of our company, and the investment in our manufacturing, warehouse and R&D capabilities supports that growth,” said PharmaForce Vice President and General Manager Dante Serricchio.

PharmaForce will add approximately 140,000 square feet to its New Albany facility to build out its manufacturing and warehouse operations. The company will also reconfigure and remodel a portion of the existing warehouse and production space. In Hilliard, PharmaForce will remodel and add 1,800 square feet to its existing facility, with plans to invest in new production equipment and supporting infrastructure.

Columbus, OH — Le Tote Inc., the fashion rental service that delivers unlimited clothing and accessories for a flat monthly fee, announced plans to open a distribution center in the Columbus Region, creating 400 new jobs. Hiring for positions in warehouse, quality control, receiving, inventory and laundry will begin in Q4 2017.
The new 250,000-square-foot facility will be located in Obetz on 5465 Centerpoint Parkway. Le Tote will invest more than $1.1 million in training costs, machinery and equipment.
“We chose the Columbus Region for its prime access to our customers and to global retail brands,” said Brett Northart, president and co-founder of Le Tote. “The Obetz location will enable us to upgrade our distribution capabilities while ensuring costs remain low.”

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross announced that the Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding $30 million to support 35 projects in 15 states under the 2017 Assistance to Coal Communities (ACC 2017) initiative. The funding will assist locally-driven efforts to communities and regions severely impacted by the declining use of coal through activities and programs that support economic diversification, job creation, capital investment, workforce development and re-employment opportunities.
“From his first days in office, President Trump ended the Federal government’s assault on the coal industry and the communities who rely on it,” said Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross. “The previous administration fought this war through unilateral executive actions and regulatory edicts, and the casualties were American workers and families.”

Dayton, OH -- NDC Technologies’ new Huber Heights headquarters means an additional 42 jobs for the Dayton region and an opportunity for some of its employees to make a big move to Ohio.

In early 2017, the company announced it would move its headquarters from Irwindale, California, to Huber Heights in a key decision designed to consolidate production and administrative functions. Relocation of its headquarters was one of several initiatives the company undertook in 2017 to grow its capabilities in the markets it serves. In order to expand, NDC officials had to look for a place with a more competitive business climate, a lower cost of living, and better proximity to its manufacturing partners and customers.

Hundreds of Farmers, Area Leaders Join Poet CEO in Commemorating Start of Construction, New Jobs, New Grain Demand

Marion, OH -- POET Biorefining – Marion broke ground today to expand its production capacity from 70 million gallons per year to 150 million gallons per year. The project will also increase production of dried distillers grains from the current 178,000 tons annually to 360,000 tons. With the groundbreaking, site work has officially begun, with project completion slated for Q3 of 2018.

“This expansion will add 26 million bushels of new corn demand annually for the local area and create new jobs and economic activity for rural Ohio," POET CEO Jeff Broin said. “In recent years, I know farmers are struggling with low commodity prices, which is creating lower farm incomes and decreasing land values. Biofuels have been the only real growth sector for ag commodities in the past decade. We will need to see biofuels increase as a percentage of the US and world fuel supply, and as a percentage of our gas tanks to stabilize worldwide ag prices and land values. We are excited that the Marion plant expansion can play a small role in this important arena."

Columbus, OH – Ohio Pack LLC, a manufacturer of the raw material used in flexible packaging for the food industry, announced it will build a new manufacturing facility in Heath, OH, investing nearly $25.4 million and adding 66 jobs over five years.

The company will build a 135,000-square-foot facility on a 20-acre property located in the Heath-Newark-Licking County Port Authority’s Central Ohio Aerospace and Technology Center. The new facility will manufacture blown plastic film, one of the raw materials used in flexible packaging manufacturing. Ohio Pack will invest $13 million toward building costs and nearly $12.4 million toward machinery and equipment. Hiring for the manufacturing positions will begin in 2018.

Columbus, OH -- Rocket Code, an E-commerce agency whose design and development efforts electrify how brands and customers experience one another, announced that it is expanding in Columbus, creating 30 new software development jobs. Hiring is expected to begin in Q1 2017. Rocket Code will invest $50,000 in building costs and software development.

Its strategy, design and development efforts allow e-commerce companies to test different variables on their online platforms to improve customer experience, and thereby improve sales. Its clients include a number of Columbus-based retailers.

Columbus Operations Advance Facility Improvements and Machinery

Columbus, OH – West-Ward Pharmaceuticals Corp., one of the leading generic prescription medication providers in the U.S. and a wholly owned subsidiary of Hikma PLC, announced that it is growing its existing Columbus facility by adding new machinery and equipment and making facility improvements. The company will also add 65 jobs over the course of 2017.

The expansion will allow the company to accommodate new and expanding product lines. West-Ward also has a 276,000-square-foot distribution facility in Obetz that broke ground in 2016 and will employ 30 once complete.

Center to House 400 Jobs by 2021

Columbus, OH -- BDO USA, LLP, one of the nation’s leading accounting and consulting firms announced that it will open a 33,000 square-foot business service center at a to-be determined location in Columbus to support the firm’s rapid growth. The firm plans to commence initial hiring in the final quarter of 2016 and plans to expand occupancy and space over time to accommodate more than 400 specialists and supervisory personnel by the end of 2021.

BDO USA is the fastest-growing of all national accounting organizations. In its most recent fiscal year, BDO USA reported revenue of $1.29 billion, an industry-leading 23 percent increase from fiscal year 2015. This represents the third consecutive year that the firm’s revenue has exceeded 20 percent growth and during the past four years, BDO’s revenues have more than doubled from $618 million in 2012 to $1.29 billion today.

New baking production facility will improve efficiency and increase production

Cleveland, OH -- Florida Bread (, a 67-year-old bakery in Taipei, Taiwan, is growing rapidly and needs a new production facility that consolidates operations, improves efficiency and increases production.

Florida Bread has engaged the United States’ leading bakery design-builder, The Austin Company (, to provide master planning services for the new facility design and process equipment layout. Austin’s team visited Taipei over the summer to gain an understanding of existing operations and the site for the new facility.

Developer receives city tax exemption to offset asbestos abatement

Tiffin, OH -- Rensko Holdings, a company out of Westerville Ohio, has purchased 1630 West Market Street and is announcing that they plan to build a Tim Hortons franchise on the property. The project will cost an estimated $1.44 million and create 35 new jobs.

Rensko owns nearly 30 Tim Hortons developments in Ohio. The company has been expanding and has identified additional growth markets for this and next year throughout the state. Tiffin is one they are targeting. Rensko is also planning to build a Tim Hortons store in Fostoria.

Jennifer Francis, Manager of New Development for Rensko Holdings, said market research and the community’s reputation has shown Tiffin to be an ideal market for a new Tim Hortons. “We are impressed with all the retail development going on in Tiffin and how the city continues to grow. We think a new Tim Hortons will be a great addition to the community,” she said.

Columbus, OH -- Italy-based Sofidel Group has announced plans to locate a new U.S. manufacturing facility in the Columbus Region. Pending required approvals and favorable due diligence, the facility will be located in Circleville.
The project represents the first U.S. greenfield project for Sofidel Group, one of the world’s leading integrated paper manufacturers. Founded nearly 50 years ago in Italy and still privately held by families of the founders, the company is recognized as the sixth largest manufacturer of tissue paper in the world, with operations in 13 countries.
“The U.S. is the most important market in the tissue paper industry, so selecting an ideal facility location was critical to our continued growth in American markets,” said Luigi Lazzareschi, chief executive officer, Sofidel Group. “Assistance from SelectUSA, JobsOhio, Columbus 2020 and the Pickaway Progress Partnership was critical in our evaluation of communities and selection of Circleville for our new plant.”

Provides the company with expanded capabilities in Europe

Twinsburg, OH -- Q Holding Company, d.b.a. Qure Medical, with corporate headquarters in Twinsburg, Ohio, has acquired UK-headquartered Silicone Altimex, announced Randy Ross, President and CEO of Qure Medical. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Qure Medical provides integrated elastomer solutions to medical device manufacturers.  Silicone Altimex is one of Europe’s leading independent manufacturers of cleanroom-produced silicone tubing components and assemblies for the pharmaceutical industry.

Federal ruling issued approves port authorities’ request for re-designation of regional harbor

The Ports of Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky -- The Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority and the Northern Kentucky Port Authority are pleased to announce formal final approval to re-designate the Port of Cincinnati to include a larger geographic region was recently received.

The United States Army Corps of Engineers has issued approval for modification of the Port of Cincinnati 26-mile statistical boundary. The Army Corps Navigation and Civil Works Decision Support Center issued the approval of the expansion and the name change to “The Ports of Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky.” The port district now includes a 226.5 mile reach of the Ohio River, including a 7-mile reach of the Licking River, in 15 counties.
