Brownsville, TX — The Brownsville Navigation District Board of Commissioners have elected John Wood chairman.
During its regular board meeting on May 18, 2016, the commission also elected John Reed as vice-chairman and Sergio Tito Lopez as secretary. Carlos R. Masso and Ralph Cowen also serve as commissioners.
Additionally, during the meeting Vice-Chairman Reed, Secretary Lopez and Commissioner Cowen were sworn in to begin their third four-year terms on the BND Board.
The BND is a policy board for the Port of Brownsville, which began operations in 1936 and since has grown into a major center for intermodal transportation and industrial development. It is the only deep water seaport directly on the U.S./Mexico border and the largest land-owning public port authority in the nation with approximately 40,000 acres.
The Port of Brownsville achieved another record-breaking year in cargo movements in 2015 handling more than 10.1 million tons of cargo, exceeding the 2014 record of 8.4 million tons. Some of the commodities moving internationally through the Port of Brownsville include steel, aluminum, minerals, gasoline, diesel and windmill components.
