Investment reinforces Topeka’s position as a leading hub for pet food and advanced food manufacturing
TOPEKA, Kan. — The J.M. Smucker Co., a national leader in food and pet product manufacturing, has announced plans to expand its manufacturing facility in Topeka, Kansas, underscoring the company’s long-term commitment to the region and its growing role in advanced food production.
The expansion includes $17.8 million in real property improvements and $2.7 million in new equipment, supporting operational growth and modernization at the long-standing facility. The project further strengthens Topeka’s position as a strategic location within the U.S. food and pet food supply chain.
“We are excited to continue expanding our operations in Topeka to support the consumers who count on our beloved brands and the dedicated workforce that delivers these high-quality products every day,” said Luke Livingston, Director of Operations for The J.M. Smucker Co. “Our facility has been part of the Topeka community for more than 55 years, and this investment reflects our commitment to growing together with the region.”
To support the project, the Joint Economic Development Organization (JEDO) of Topeka and Shawnee County approved $383,000 in economic development incentives, aimed at fostering the company’s continued success while reinforcing local economic growth.
“This significant investment by an industry leader like Smucker represents a major step forward for Topeka’s manufacturing sector,” said Rhiannon Friedman, President of GO Topeka. “This project strengthens our industrial base, supports high-quality manufacturing jobs, and contributes to sustained economic momentum in our community.”
The announcement comes amid a wave of food manufacturing investment in the region. Reser’s Fine Foods recently unveiled a $34 million expansion expected to create 60 new jobs, adding to Topeka’s growing reputation as a center for food production and innovation.
Further reinforcing this momentum is the upcoming launch of LINK Innovation, a new initiative designed to support food and beverage companies with product development, commercialization resources, and access to capital. LINK Innovation will connect established manufacturers, emerging brands, and investors, creating a coordinated ecosystem that accelerates innovation and business growth.
Together, these developments highlight Topeka’s emergence as a competitive destination for food and pet food manufacturers seeking strategic location advantages, workforce strength, and a supportive economic development environment.
