Strengthening U.S. Biofertilizer Production
NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (October 15, 2025) — Global agri-tech leader Alltech has broken ground on a $4.6 million expansion at its Nicholasville headquarters, a project that will create six new manufacturing jobs and enhance domestic production of biofertilizers and natural crop solutions.
The investment, supported by a $2.34 million award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Fertilizer Production Expansion Program, marks Alltech’s first U.S.-based manufacturing facility dedicated solely to crop science solutions. The site will produce more than 66,000 gallons of biological fertilizer products per shift per month, helping American farmers reduce reliance on imported chemicals and avoid global supply chain disruptions.
“Alltech’s expansion will create more good jobs for our people and strengthen Kentucky’s position as a leader in agricultural innovation,” said Gov. Andy Beshear. “We’re grateful for their continued investment and partnership with Team Kentucky.”
Located in Jessamine County, the new facility will be modeled after Alltech’s operations in Brazil and Spain, producing more than 30 sustainable crop products designed to enhance soil fertility, stimulate root development, and improve nutrient uptake.
“This facility represents the next phase in scaling our biological innovations for agriculture,” said Dr. Steve Borst, vice president of Alltech Crop Science. “By expanding production here in Kentucky, we can provide farmers with natural, science-based solutions that improve soil health, strengthen crops, and reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers.”
“Alltech has always been rooted in innovation,” added Dr. Mark Lyons, president and CEO of Alltech. “This expansion deepens our Kentucky presence and strengthens our mission to support sustainable farming, from local communities to global markets.”
Founded in 1980 by Irish entrepreneur Dr. Pearse Lyons, Alltech operates more than 75 manufacturing facilities worldwide and serves customers in over 140 countries. The company employs more than 5,000 people globally, producing specialty ingredients, feed supplements, and biological crop and soil solutions.
Local leaders praised the company’s investment and commitment to community partnership.
- “Alltech continues to be an excellent community partner, providing opportunities for world-class innovation and employment,” said Jessamine County Judge/Executive David West.
- Nicholasville Mayor Alex Carter added, “This expansion is a win for sustainable farming in America and for Nicholasville’s growing innovation economy.”
