Major clean energy investment to create 600+ jobs and strengthen U.S. solar supply chain
GAFFNEY, S.C. — First Solar, Inc., a leading U.S.-based photovoltaic (PV) solar technology manufacturer, announced a major expansion of its South Carolina operations with a new $330 million manufacturing facility in Cherokee County. The project is expected to create more than 600 new jobs, significantly strengthening the state’s fast-growing clean energy and advanced manufacturing sectors.
Founded in 1999 and headquartered in Arizona, First Solar is the largest solar module manufacturer in the Western Hemisphere. Its new Gaffney facility, located at 121 Logistics Drive, will bring critical solar module finishing processes back to the United States, completing production for its high-efficiency Series 6 modules that begin manufacturing in the company’s global facilities.
The company already operates a distribution center in Duncan, S.C., and benefits from a strong logistics partnership with Inland Port Greer, enhancing its supply chain connectivity throughout the Southeast.
The new Cherokee County facility will become part of one of the nation’s most significant solar manufacturing and R&D footprints, which currently includes five vertically integrated First Solar plants across three states and a nationwide supplier network. Operations are expected to begin in the second half of 2026. Job seekers may explore opportunities through First Solar’s careers page.
To support the project, the Coordinating Council for Economic Development approved job development credits.
