Adding 18 New Jobs in Horry County, South Carolina
CONWAY, SC — September 17, 2025 — Galivants Ferry Sawmill has announced plans to open a new sawmill operation in Horry County, investing more than $10 million and creating 18 direct jobs, with additional indirect employment expected across the region. The facility, located on McCracken Road in Galivants Ferry, will support the local timber industry and help fill the gap left by recent mill closures in Georgetown and surrounding areas.
A sister company to SB Mulch, Johnson Land and Timber (JLT), and Beach Mulch, Galivants Ferry Sawmill is a family-owned business committed to diversifying the local economy and supporting regional loggers, truck drivers, and mill operators. The new facility will supply essential products including railroad ties, pallets, landscaping materials, and boiler-grade waste fiber to a wide range of industries.
“Galivants Ferry is our home and the community we love,” said Matthew Johnson, founder of Galivants Ferry Sawmill. “This facility will support area businesses impacted by recent closures, and we’re proud to expand our services and give back to the region that has supported us.”
Supporting Rural Industry and Community Growth
The sawmill has been under construction for nearly a year and is expected to play a vital role in stabilizing the pulpwood market and supporting wastewater treatment facilities, landscaping companies, and industrial boiler operations. Job openings will be posted on Indeed, with plans for continued growth in the coming years.
“A $10 million investment and nearly 20 new jobs is a huge win for Horry County,” said County Council Chairman Johnny Gardner. “We’re proud to welcome Galivants Ferry Sawmill to Team Horry.”
“This expansion reflects the strength and resilience of our rural communities,” added Councilman Al Allen, District 11. “It’s exciting to see a local family grow their business in their hometown.”
Industry Impact and Regional Collaboration
The Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Corporation (MBREDC) played a key role in supporting the project, which aligns with its mission to grow existing industries and promote economic vitality across Horry County.
“This facility replaces lost capacity and supports a wide range of jobs in our timber industry,” said MBREDC Chairman Gregg Smith. “It’s a perfect example of our commitment to helping local businesses thrive.”
