Charleroi expansion will create approximately 275 skilled jobs while strengthening the domestic supply chain for critical electrical grid components
CHARLEROI, Pa. — August 11, 2026 — GE Vernova is expanding and modernizing its Power Transmission manufacturing facility in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, as part of a $138 million investment designed to strengthen the U.S. electrical grid supply chain.
The facility manufactures high-voltage circuit breakers, switchgear products and instrument transformers. Increasing its production capacity will help reduce lead times for critical grid components while allowing utilities to connect new sources of electricity demand—including data centers—more quickly and reliably.

Creating Skilled Manufacturing Jobs in Pennsylvania
GE Vernova expects the Charleroi expansion to create approximately 275 highly skilled manufacturing positions through 2028, with further hiring planned through 2030.
New employment opportunities are expected to include:
- Wiring technicians
- Mechanics
- Test technicians
- Logistics coordinators
- Supply chain specialists
Combined with other projects, GE Vernova plans to invest approximately $166 million in Western Pennsylvania and create more than 700 skilled manufacturing jobs across the state.
“Expanding our manufacturing capacity in Pennsylvania is a cornerstone of our strategy to meet the energy needs of an increasingly electrified world while helping modernize our nation’s grid infrastructure,” GE Vernova CEO Scott Strazik said. “By investing in American manufacturing and our workforce, we are strengthening the domestic supply chain and helping deliver the essential technologies our customers need to build a more reliable and resilient grid.”
Supporting Grid Modernization and Data Center Growth
Demand for electrical infrastructure is increasing as utilities work to modernize the power grid and accommodate growing energy needs from data centers, advanced manufacturing operations and other electricity-intensive industries.
By expanding production in Charleroi, GE Vernova aims to improve the availability of equipment utilities need to safely transmit and distribute electricity. Greater domestic manufacturing capacity can also help reduce supply-chain constraints and accelerate the completion of energy infrastructure projects.
The company commemorated the expansion during an event attended by Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

Shapiro said GE Vernova’s decision to expand in Pennsylvania demonstrates the effectiveness of the state’s economic development strategy while creating good-paying jobs and positioning the Commonwealth to lead in energy and advanced manufacturing.
Part of a $1.3 Billion U.S. Manufacturing Strategy
The Charleroi expansion is part of GE Vernova’s broader plan to invest nearly $1.3 billion in its U.S. manufacturing facilities and research centers between 2025 and 2028.
The nationwide investment program is intended to:
- Expand domestic manufacturing capacity
- Accelerate energy technology innovation
- Strengthen U.S. supply chains
- Support growing electricity demand
- Improve the reliability and resilience of the power grid
Pittsburgh’s Energy Economy Gains Momentum
GE Vernova’s investment adds to a series of major energy, infrastructure and advanced manufacturing announcements across the Pittsburgh region.
Recent projects include:
- Liberty Energy’s planned power-generation facility in the Pittsburgh area
- The transformation of the former Homer City coal plant into a proposed $10 billion natural gas-powered data center campus
- Mitsubishi Electric Power Products’ new advanced switchgear factory
- Continued investment in electrical equipment needed to support data centers, renewable energy and grid modernization
The planned Homer City development is expected to generate up to 4.5 gigawatts of electricity by 2027, while Mitsubishi Electric Power Products is developing a facility to manufacture circuit breakers and other switchgear equipment essential to the modern electric grid.
Federal Hydrogen Investments Expand Regional Opportunities
The Pittsburgh region is also positioned to benefit from federal investment in emerging hydrogen technologies.
The U.S. Department of Energy announced nearly $5 billion in funding for five hydrogen hubs, including two with significant ties to Pennsylvania:
- Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub, known as MACH2
- Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub, known as ARCH2
Together, the two hubs are projected to support more than 41,000 jobs and generate opportunities across construction, manufacturing, industrial decarbonization and advanced energy deployment.
Combined investments in power generation, grid infrastructure, hydrogen, data centers and advanced manufacturing are strengthening Pittsburgh’s position as a national center for the technologies shaping America’s energy future.
