The Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), is thrilled to announce the certification of a 1,252-acre property in Limestone County as a TVA Mega Site. This milestone positions Huntsville as a premier destination for large-scale industrial and manufacturing projects, promising significant economic growth for the region.
Located off Powell Road with strategic access to I-565, I-65, and the Tennessee River, the site meets TVA’s rigorous criteria for a mega site, including a minimum of 1,000 acres, interstate connectivity, potential rail service, and robust utility infrastructure. Certified by McCallum Sweeney Consulting, this “shovel-ready” site is free of environmental, historical, or cultural impediments, making it an ideal choice for global companies seeking to establish or expand operations.
“This certification is an international calling card for Huntsville,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “It signals to high-tech industries worldwide that our city is ready to support their growth, bringing thousands of high-paying jobs to our community.” Economic projections estimate the site could generate 2,000 to 4,000 direct jobs, with an additional 2.5 jobs created for each direct position, amplifying the economic impact across the Tennessee Valley.
The certification marks a significant achievement for Alabama, as this is the state’s first TVA-certified mega site. “Huntsville continues to drive Alabama’s economic engine,” said Governor Robert Bentley. “This designation enhances our ability to attract transformative investments and create opportunities for our citizens.”
TVA President and CEO Bill Johnson emphasized the regional benefits, stating, “Our mega sites have a proven track record, with five of seven previously certified sites securing over $5 billion in investments and creating more than 30,000 jobs. This certification positions Huntsville for similar success.”
The journey to certification began in 2011, spurred by the city’s commitment to compete globally after losing a Volkswagen plant to Chattanooga. Local leaders, including the Limestone County Economic Development Association and the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce, collaborated with TVA to ensure the site’s readiness for development.
