Permitting milestones, preliminary planning and new leadership support development in Coosa County
COOSA COUNTY, Ala. — Westwater Resources is moving forward with environmental reviews and preliminary design for its proposed Coosa Graphite Mine, part of its strategy to develop a domestic battery-material supply chain.
Federal and State Reviews Progress
In its October 16 update, Westwater reported that endangered-species consultation had finished ahead of schedule. Public comment on its federal Clean Water Act Section 404 application had also closed, with agency review continuing.
Cultural-resource surveys and wetlands fieldwork are complete. Alabama regulators are reviewing the project’s discharge permit and water-quality certification applications.
The FAST-41 schedule cited in the announcement targets June 2027 for permitting completion. That target does not represent final approval.
Mine Planning and Leadership
Westwater has begun preliminary planning studies, including an assessment of whether vanadium could be incorporated into the mine plan.
The company also named Dr. Anne Duncan general manager, effective October 26, 2026.
Coosa is intended to supply natural graphite to Westwater’s nearby Kellyton processing plant for battery-anode materials.
