JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (December 3, 2025) — Indiana River & Rail Terminals has increased its capacity for handling steel and general cargo barge shipments at Ports of Indiana–Jeffersonville by 40 percent. The Ohio River terminal operator has expanded its storage footprint to 350,000 square feet after leasing a fourth building within the port.
Indiana River & Rail Terminals (IRRT), a joint venture between Ports of Indiana and Superior River Terminals Indiana, is the largest general cargo operator on the Ohio River. The company manages seven buildings and provides multimodal logistics services across 2,200 acres at ports in both Mount Vernon and Jeffersonville.
With steady double-digit growth since 2022 — driven by strong cargo demand and strategic positioning along the Ohio River — IRRT’s expanded facilities and enhanced multimodal capabilities position it to serve more customers and handle increased volumes.
By late 2024, Jeffersonville was nearing capacity for steel shipments, prompting IRRT to lease an additional 156,000-square-foot building. This new facility supplements the existing 195,000 square feet of warehouse space, bringing IRRT’s total operating footprint to just over 350,000 square feet.
“Indiana River & Rail’s growth reflects the strength of our partnership and the increasing demand for flexible, multimodal logistics solutions in southern Indiana,” said Jody Peacock, CEO of Ports of Indiana. “We’re proud to support this expansion and ensure Jeffersonville remains a vital hub for barge, rail, and truck shipments.”
The additional capacity will support Foreign-Trade Zone storage, heavy-lift cargo operations, rail transloading, and increased volumes across barge, rail, and trucking networks. The expansion also leverages the region’s skilled logistics workforce, enhancing Jeffersonville’s ability to serve a wide range of industries and cargo types.
“We’re not just adding square footage — we’re adding opportunity,” said Jonathan Lamb, President of IRRT. “This expansion is about meeting demand and staying ahead of the curve. Adding new warehouse space ensures we can continue to serve our customers with speed, flexibility, and reliability.”
IRRT also manages an outdoor storage facility funded through the Marine Highway Grant, which supports barge shuttles for Nucor and other steel producers. This system reduces highway congestion by removing thousands of truck trips from local roads while supporting regional jobs.
“Indiana River & Rail serves as a model of collaborative growth, combining the operational expertise of an experienced logistics company with the economic development mission of Ports of Indiana,” said George Ott, Port Director for Ports of Indiana–Jeffersonville. “Together, these partners deliver efficient, customer-focused solutions that strengthen economic development and global trade.”
