$72.8 Million Investment to Create 150 Jobs and Advance Smart Manufacturing in West Michigan
JR Automation, a global leader in intelligent manufacturing solutions and a Hitachi group company, has announced plans to establish its new global headquarters in Zeeland, Michigan. The $72.8 million investment will consolidate three existing facilities into a single, state-of-the-art campus, creating 150 new jobs and reinforcing Michigan’s position as a hub for advanced manufacturing and automation.
The announcement was made during Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s investment mission to Japan, where she met with companies expanding or exploring opportunities in Michigan.
“JR Automation’s new global headquarters is a powerful example of what’s possible when we invest in innovation and build strong partnerships with global leaders like Hitachi,” said Governor Whitmer. “This project will create good-paying jobs, strengthen our advanced manufacturing sector, and showcase Michigan’s leadership in cutting-edge technology.”
The Zeeland facility will serve as a central location for JR Automation’s global operations, combining office, manufacturing, and customer engagement spaces. Hitachi also plans to co-locate select global employees at the site, fostering deeper collaboration and integration across teams.
“As a truly global company, we need a headquarters that reflects our scale and ambition,” said Dave DeGraaf, CEO of JR Automation and General Manager of Hitachi’s Automation Division. “This new facility will allow us to host customers, showcase emerging technologies, and attract top talent—all within a thriving automation ecosystem.”
Michigan secured the project over competing locations, including South Carolina, thanks to its robust talent pool, strategic infrastructure, and strong economic development partnerships.
“Hitachi’s investment signals real confidence in West Michigan’s smart manufacturing capabilities,” said Jennifer Owens, President of Lakeshore Advantage. “This mission is about building meaningful relationships and showcasing the innovation culture that makes our region a smart place to grow.”
The headquarters will also serve as a platform for JR Automation to expand its reach across industries such as medical, energy, warehousing, and consumer goods. The facility will highlight the convergence of operational and information technology, helping clients manufacture smarter, more connected products.
“This new headquarters reflects Hitachi’s commitment to advancing smart manufacturing globally,” said Charlie Takeuchi, President and CEO of Hitachi Americas, Ltd. “It will be a catalyst for integrated automation and innovation.”
The project was first introduced to Governor Whitmer and Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) CEO Quentin Messer, Jr. at the Select USA 2024 conference, a premier event promoting foreign direct investment into the United States.
“JR Automation’s decision to name Zeeland its global headquarters is proof that our ‘Make it in Michigan’ strategy is resonating globally,” said Quentin L. Messer, Jr., CEO of the MEDC. “We’re proud to support their growth and remain committed to earning international investment for years to come.”
In alignment with JR Automation and Hitachi’s sustainability goals, the new site will incorporate native prairie landscaping, on-site solar panels, and a commitment to renewable energy-powered operations.
“Zeeland is proud to welcome JR Automation’s global headquarters,” said Mayor Kevin Klynstra. “This investment is a cornerstone for smart manufacturing in West Michigan, and we’re ready to support a shared vision of prosperity.”
