Octapharma plans to invest $1.5 billion to establish a biopharmaceutical manufacturing campus and U.S. corporate headquarters in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
The transformational project is expected to create more than 1,500 jobs, making it one of the largest economic development announcements in South Carolina’s history. It also represents a major life sciences investment for York County and the greater Charlotte metropolitan region.
The campus will be developed at Palmetto Research Park near Interstate 77. It is expected to become Octapharma’s flagship U.S. manufacturing operation and anchor the research park as a destination for life sciences, advanced manufacturing and corporate investment.
First Octapharma Manufacturing Facility in the United States
Headquartered in Switzerland, Octapharma is one of the world’s largest privately owned manufacturers of human protein therapies.
The company develops products derived from human plasma and recombinant technologies for patients with rare diseases, immune disorders, hematological conditions and critical-care needs.
Octapharma operates in more than 100 countries through a global network of manufacturing, research and plasma-collection facilities. The Rock Hill development will mark the company’s first manufacturing facility in the United States.
In addition to production operations, the campus will serve as Octapharma’s American corporate headquarters, bringing manufacturing and corporate functions together at a single South Carolina location.
Project Advances Rock Hill’s Life Sciences Strategy
Rock Hill officials have invested several years in positioning Palmetto Research Park for life sciences and advanced manufacturing development.
The Octapharma project validates that strategy while establishing a major employment and investment anchor for the park. The development is also expected to expand the local tax base and strengthen the region’s innovation economy.
Located near Interstate 77, Rock Hill provides access to the Charlotte market, regional transportation infrastructure and a growing workforce. Partnerships among local and state economic development organizations have further strengthened the area’s ability to compete for global manufacturing projects.
