Mojave, California — Pacific Steel Group celebrated a historic milestone today with the groundbreaking of the Mojave Micro Mill—the first steel mill to be built in California in the last five decades. Located in Mojave, California, the advanced manufacturing and recycling facility will produce reinforcing steel essential for infrastructure and climate resilience.
“This is a very exciting day for our company. It represents a culmination of nearly 5 years of work and is the first tangible step toward full vertical integration of our reinforcing steel operations. I could not be more proud of the team that we have assembled. Their collective efforts in achieving this milestone is truly an extraordinary accomplishment, ” said Pacific Steel Group CEO Eric Benson.
“As we move forward with this exciting project, I am confident it will further strengthen our position as the market leader and ensure our competitiveness for many years to come. ”
Kern County District 2 Supervisor Chris Parlier joined Pacific Steel Group (PSG) at the ceremony to highlight the project’s importance, emphasizing its significant investment in Kern County and dedication to localizing the steel supply chain.
“Pacific Steel Group’s investment in Kern County is more than just the construction of a steel mill—it’s a transformational step forward for our local economy and workforce. The Mojave Micro Mill represents the future of American manufacturing, producing seismic-grade, green rebar right here in Kern County,” said Supervisor Chris Parlier.
“With over $600 million invested and more than 400 permanent jobs created, this project reinforces our position as the epicenter of industrial innovation in California. We are proud to welcome Pacific Steel Group to our community, and I look forward to seeing the lasting impact this mill will have on our region’s future.”
Along with providing necessary economic activity in Kern County, the mill will revolutionize steelmaking with first-of-its-kind zero carbon emissions steel. Spanning 174 acres, the Mojave Micro Mill will dedicate approximately 63 acres to on-site renewable energy. The facility is set to establish new industry standards for emissions reduction by incorporating a state-of-the-art carbon capture system, secondary high-efficiency filtration, and NOx emissions mitigation.
“Pacific Steel Group’s Mojave Micro Mill highlights the California way to green manufacturing. This project is setting the standard for the steel industry by utilizing on-site renewable energy to produce green rebar with a significantly lower carbon footprint,” California Air Resources Board Chair Liane Randolph said.
“It’s a shining example of how California continues to lead the nation in driving sustainable innovation, and we are proud to see this groundbreaking project take place right here in our state.”
Today’s groundbreaking marks the start of construction on the Mojave Micro Mill, with plant commissioning scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.
