The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) announced a transformative step in its commitment to cleaner, reliable energy with the approval of a new 1,450-megawatt natural gas-fueled combined cycle plant at its Cumberland site in Middle Tennessee. This state-of-the-art facility, part of the Cumberland Energy Solution (CES) project, will replace one of the two coal-fired units at the Cumberland Fossil Plant, which is slated for retirement by the end of 2026.
Following a comprehensive two-year environmental review process, the new combined cycle plant is designed to reduce carbon emissions by up to 60% compared to the existing coal unit, aligning with TVA’s goal of achieving a 70% carbon reduction by 2030. The $2.1 billion project, approved by the TVA Board in August 2023, is now under construction and is expected to be operational by 2026.
“TVA is proud to lead the transition to a cleaner energy future while ensuring reliable power for the 10 million people we serve,” said Jeff Lyash, TVA President and CEO. “The Cumberland Combined Cycle Plant represents a balanced approach to sustainability, affordability, and grid reliability.”
The project includes the construction of a 32-mile natural gas pipeline across Dickson, Houston, and Stewart counties to fuel the new facility. At its peak, the construction effort will support up to 1,100 skilled labor and union jobs daily, boosting the regional economy and fostering partnerships with local communities.
The Cumberland Combined Cycle Plant will leverage advanced technology to deliver efficient, flexible power, capable of meeting the region’s growing energy demands while reducing environmental impact. This initiative underscores TVA’s leadership in delivering innovative energy solutions for a sustainable future.
