Government Business Review recognizes his work in broadband, workforce development and regional business growth.
MORRISON, Ill. — Gary Camarano, Whiteside County’s economic development director and executive director of the Northwest Illinois Film Office, has been named 2026 Economic Development Director of the Year by Government Business Review.
The recognition highlights Camarano’s work to strengthen Northwest Illinois through regional broadband development, workforce programs, business attraction and film industry initiatives. According to Government Business Review, his approach brings public and private partners together around long-term economic opportunities.
Building Northwest Illinois’ Competitive Strengths
Camarano’s regional work includes advancing a fiber broadband project supported by a coalition and a major grant award. He has also helped develop apprenticeship programs serving manufacturing, logistics, digital technology and creative industries.
His business development efforts draw on Northwest Illinois’ manufacturing base, transportation connections and cost advantages. Through the Northwest Illinois Film Office, he has expanded opportunities to promote the region’s locations, tourism and creative sector.

The Northwest Illinois region includes Whiteside, Carroll, Lee, Ogle and Jo Daviess counties. Its strengths span metal fabrication, logistics, agriculture, digital infrastructure and creative industries.
