Project Creating 150 Jobs
Baltimore County, MD – September 16, 2025 – Governor Wes Moore today announced that JD Fields HDM Spiralweld Mill, LLC, a leader in steel piling manufacturing, will invest $50 million to open a new 200,000-square-foot pipe pile fabrication facility at Tradepoint Atlantic in Baltimore County. The expansion will create 150 high-skilled manufacturing jobs and marks the company’s first East Coast location.
The project reflects a strategic partnership between JD Fields & Company and HDM Steel Pipe, operating as JD Fields HDM Spiralweld Mill, LLC. The new facility, located on 13 acres within Tradepoint Atlantic’s Sparrows Point peninsula, is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with operations beginning in early 2027.
“Once the Bethlehem Steel plant closed, many thought steel would never return to Baltimore,” said Governor Moore. “But today, we’ve proven that Maryland can deliver one of the great comeback stories in American history. This project is proof of what happens when the public and private sectors work together to achieve the extraordinary.”
Strategic Support and Investment
To assist with the expansion, the Maryland Department of Commerce is working to approve a $1 million conditional loan through Advantage Maryland. The project is also eligible for up to $750,000 in Job Creation Tax Credits, while Baltimore County is providing a $100,000 conditional loan to support facility expenses.
“This project strengthens Maryland’s manufacturing sector and supports critical infrastructure nationwide,” said Harry Coker, Jr., Maryland Secretary of Commerce. “JD Fields HDM Spiralweld Mill brings national recognition to our state and highlights our growing industrial capabilities.”
Driving Infrastructure Growth
The state-of-the-art facility will fabricate structural steel products from both international and domestic steel plates and coils. With access to marine and breakbulk facilities at the Port of Baltimore, the location provides the company with unmatched logistics advantages for serving customers and infrastructure projects across the country.
“JD Fields HDM Spiralweld Mill has nearly four decades of expertise in steel distribution, fabrication and manufacturing,” said Joel S. Showalter, Vice President and CFO of JD Fields & Company, Inc. “We are proud to expand to Maryland and look forward to serving customers from our new East Coast hub.”
Kerry Doyle, Managing Director at Tradepoint Atlantic, added: “This investment demonstrates Tradepoint Atlantic’s ability to provide manufacturers with unique supply chain connectivity, driving both efficiency and resiliency in operations. We’re thrilled to welcome JD Fields HDM Spiralweld Mill to Sparrows Point and to see steel manufacturing return to this historic site.”
Baltimore County Executive Kathy Klausmeier also celebrated the news: “We are excited to welcome JD Fields HDM Spiralweld Mill to our community. This investment not only creates high-quality jobs but also reinforces Baltimore County as a hub for advanced manufacturing.”
