Athens project tied to U.S. Army contract will add jobs, automation, and advanced production capabilities
ATHENS, Tenn. (January 15, 2026) — Heil Trailer International, a global manufacturer of specialty transport trailers, announced plans to expand its manufacturing operations in McMinn County, investing $9.8 million at its Athens, Tennessee, facility following the award of a 10-year U.S. Department of the Army contract.
The expansion will create 18 new jobs and support production of the company’s Tactical Fuel Distribution System (TFDS), a critical capability for U.S. military operations. The project includes the construction of new warehouse space, the installation of state-of-the-art automated paint and welding systems, an expanded testing area, and enhancements to Heil Trailer’s welding and training school, creating new opportunities for automation and skilled manufacturing technicians.
State leaders said the investment reflects Tennessee’s strength as a manufacturing and defense production hub.
“Companies like Heil Trailer continue to choose Tennessee because of our skilled workforce and pro-business climate,” said Governor Bill Lee. “This expansion will have a lasting impact on the Southeast region and reinforces Tennessee’s leadership in advanced manufacturing.”
Founded in 1901, Heil Trailer International is part of the EnTrans International family of brands, with operations across two continents, facilities in four countries, and more than 1,850 employees serving customers in over 85 countries worldwide. Heil Trailer has operated in Athens since 1977 and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in Tennessee in 2027.
“The TFDS program represents a monumental win for Heil Trailer, EnTrans, and the Athens community,” said Ryan Rockafellow, CEO of EnTrans International. “This expansion ensures we can deliver critical capabilities to the U.S. Army rapidly, at scale, and on budget, while reinforcing our long-standing commitment to Athens.”
Local and regional officials highlighted the expansion’s role in strengthening McMinn County’s manufacturing base and workforce.
“Heil Trailer produces roughly half of all tank trailers in the United States,” said McMinn County Mayor John Gentry. “That means McMinn County’s craftsmanship is on display nationwide, and this investment further strengthens our workforce.”
“This project reaffirms that Athens is a place where businesses can grow and thrive,” added Athens Mayor Larry Eaton. “Investments like this create jobs and enhance the quality of life for our residents.”
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and regional economic development partners also praised the expansion.
“We are proud to support Heil Trailer as it grows its operations in McMinn County,” said Heidi Smith, vice president of economic development at TVA. “This investment reinforces the region’s manufacturing foundation and long-term competitiveness.”
The project aligns with the U.S. Army’s Transformation Initiative, positioning Heil Trailer’s Athens facility as a key contributor to national defense logistics and supply chain resilience.
