WILL COUNTY, Ill. (Mar. 17, 2026) — Hyundai Translead has announced plans to establish new trailer manufacturing operations in Illinois, marking a significant expansion of the company’s North American production footprint and reinforcing the state’s position as a leading destination for advanced manufacturing investment.
The global transportation equipment manufacturer will invest approximately $450 million to develop new production facilities in Will County, creating nearly 2,500 full-time jobs. The project represents one of the largest recent industrial investments in the region and is expected to generate long-term economic benefits through supply chain growth, workforce development and increased manufacturing capacity.
The new facilities will be located on former industrial sites previously occupied by Caterpillar heavy equipment operations and a separate electric vehicle manufacturing project. Redevelopment of these properties into modern manufacturing campuses reflects ongoing efforts to reposition legacy industrial assets for next-generation production and logistics activity.
Hyundai Translead, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company, produces a range of commercial transportation equipment including dry and refrigerated van trailers, flatbeds, truck bodies and dollies. The Illinois expansion is designed to enhance the company’s ability to serve customers across North America while strengthening its manufacturing network.
State and regional economic development partners worked collaboratively to support the project, aligning workforce training initiatives, infrastructure resources and incentive programs to facilitate the company’s investment. The project is expected to create high-skill employment opportunities while supporting broader industrial growth throughout the Chicago-area logistics and manufacturing corridor.
Illinois continues to leverage its central geographic location, multimodal transportation infrastructure and established industrial workforce to attract major corporate expansions. The Hyundai Translead investment builds on recent manufacturing announcements across sectors including advanced machinery, materials and transportation technologies.
The project also highlights growing demand for modern trailer and commercial vehicle manufacturing capacity as freight networks evolve and supply chains adapt to shifting market conditions. By expanding production capabilities in Will County, Hyundai Translead is positioning itself to meet increasing customer demand while contributing to regional economic diversification.
In addition to direct employment, the development is anticipated to generate secondary economic activity through supplier relationships, construction spending and long-term operational investment. Workforce training partnerships with local educational institutions are expected to play a key role in preparing talent pipelines for welding, industrial maintenance and advanced manufacturing roles.
The expansion underscores the ongoing transformation of Illinois’ industrial landscape, where redevelopment of legacy sites and targeted incentive programs are supporting large-scale manufacturing investment. As the project moves forward, Hyundai Translead’s new facilities are expected to reinforce Will County’s role as a strategic hub for logistics-oriented production and distribution.
Founded in 1989, Hyundai Translead is a leading manufacturer of commercial transportation equipment in North America. Headquartered in San Diego and wholly owned by Hyundai Motor Company, the company leverages advanced engineering and production technologies to deliver integrated logistics solutions. The Illinois investment represents a significant milestone in the company’s long-term growth strategy across North American markets.
