More than $330 million modernization strengthens Acadiana’s role as a Gulf South logistics hub; Project to begin in 2026
OPELOUSAS, La. — Louisiana’s strategic focus on infrastructure, workforce development, and competitive incentives continues to generate major wins as Walmart announced plans to invest more than $330 million to modernize its regional distribution center in Opelousas.
The phased, multi-year modernization project will significantly upgrade the nearly 25-year-old facility in St. Landry Parish and is expected to nearly double shipping capacity once completed. The investment is part of Walmart’s nationwide initiative to modernize all 42 of its regional distribution centers and reinforces Louisiana’s growing importance as a Gulf South logistics and supply chain hub.
Walmart expects to retain its existing workforce while transitioning many roles toward higher-skilled positions supporting automation, robotics, and advanced logistics technologies. The company currently employs more than 37,400 associates in Louisiana, including over 1,900 workers across its distribution centers statewide.
“Walmart’s modernization of its Opelousas distribution center is a powerful example of Louisiana’s strategy moving from plans to progress,” said Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Susan B. Bourgeois. “Logistics is a newly designated key industry in our statewide strategic plan, and this investment strengthens one of our most important distribution hubs while protecting and advancing Louisiana’s workforce. By integrating advanced technology and creating pathways for employee growth, Walmart is demonstrating the kind of responsible, forward-looking investment that defines Louisiana’s momentum today.”
Louisiana’s central location in the Gulf South, strong labor force, and competitive incentive programs positioned the state as a natural choice for the significant reinvestment.
“Louisiana and Opelousas have been great partners for nearly 25 years,” said Mike Gray, Senior Vice President of Walmart Supply Chain. “By adding robotics and automation, we’re transforming how we serve our stores and customers. This investment allows us to grow alongside the community while creating new opportunities for career advancement for our associates.”
Once complete, the upgraded Opelousas facility will ship nearly twice the number of cases as a traditional distribution center, improving supply chain efficiency for Walmart stores throughout the region.
“Walmart’s more than $330 million reinvestment in its Opelousas Distribution Center is a tremendous win for St. Landry Parish,” said St. Landry Parish President Jessie Bellard. “This project not only secures existing jobs but strengthens the foundation of our local economy for decades to come. Walmart’s continued commitment supports local families, sustains parish services, and reinforces St. Landry Parish as a place where major employers can thrive.”
“Walmart’s decision to reinvest reflects strong confidence in this community and a long-term commitment to Louisiana,” said Bill Rodier, CEO of St. Landry Economic Development. “As an anchor employer for St. Landry Parish, the Acadiana Region, and central Louisiana, Walmart continues to strengthen the economic foundation that supports jobs, opportunity, and growth.”
To support the project, the state of Louisiana provided a competitive incentives package, including a $10 million performance-based grant tied to equipment investments. The project reflects close collaboration among state, regional, and local economic development partners.
“Walmart’s investment underscores the confidence global leaders have in Acadiana’s potential,” said Troy Wayman, President and CEO of One Acadiana. “This modernization builds on the innovation happening across our region and positions us for continued growth and competitiveness. We congratulate our partners in St. Landry Parish on this transformative investment.”
