COVINGTON, Ky. (Mar. 26, 2026) — Kentucky’s life sciences sector continues to gain global momentum as Japan-based Mitsui Chemicals America becomes the first international lab resident at LifeSciKY’s incubator facility within the OneNKY Center in Covington. State and regional leaders joined company executives and innovation partners to celebrate the milestone partnership, which is expected to advance biomedical research and next-generation materials development.
The collaboration centers on research and development activities aligned with Mitsui Chemicals’ focus on cell culture technologies and advanced polymer solutions, including its proprietary InnoCell platform. By leveraging LifeSciKY’s fully equipped laboratory space and innovation ecosystem, the company aims to accelerate the development of new plastic materials designed for life sciences applications.
Gov. Andy Beshear highlighted the partnership as an example of how cross-sector collaboration is strengthening Kentucky’s competitive position in high-growth innovation industries. The project builds on the state’s earlier investment in the LifeSciKY facility, which received $15 million in public funding to support lab infrastructure and entrepreneurship initiatives.
Opened in September 2025, LifeSciKY serves as a nonprofit innovation hub focused on accelerating commercialization, workforce training and scientific discovery. The OneNKY Center, which houses multiple regional development organizations, provides a collaborative environment designed to support startups, corporate research teams and academic partnerships.
Regional leaders note that Mitsui Chemicals’ presence reinforces Northern Kentucky’s ties to international business networks while deepening the region’s emerging life sciences cluster. With access to talent, research partnerships and shared lab resources, the incubator model is intended to reduce barriers to entry for advanced R&D activities and help position Kentucky as a competitive destination for global life sciences investment.
The addition of Mitsui Chemicals further reflects Kentucky’s broader economic development momentum, particularly in innovation-driven sectors that combine advanced manufacturing, biotechnology and materials science.
