$65 Million Investment to Create 118 Jobs and Bolster U.S. Defense Supply Chain
Henry County, VA — In a landmark move for American manufacturing, Nathan Trotter, North America’s leading supplier and recycler of tin and tin alloy products, has announced a $65 million investment to establish Tin Ridge, the nation’s first large-scale tin production and processing facility. The project will be located on a strategic 44-acre site at the Patriot Centre Industrial Park, just north of Martinsville, Virginia.
The 115,000-square-foot facility will significantly enhance domestic tin supply and recycling capabilities, creating an estimated 118 new jobs and reinforcing the U.S. defense industrial base. Tin, designated by the federal government as a critical mineral, plays an essential role in electronics, defense systems, electric vehicles, and advanced technologies.
Strengthening America’s Critical Mineral Infrastructure
“With today’s exciting announcement at Tin Ridge, Virginia continues to demonstrate that we are the best state in America if you’re looking to do business,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “Nathan Trotter’s historic investment in Henry County strengthens our national defense supply chain while creating high-quality jobs in advanced manufacturing.”
Secretary of Commerce and Trade Juan Pablo Segura added, “This project ensures the future of American manufacturing is powered by Virginia workers. We are proud to welcome such a forward-looking company to the Commonwealth.”
Tin Ridge will be the first U.S. facility capable of refining significant volumes of both tin concentrate and scrap tin, reducing reliance on foreign imports. Designed with cutting-edge, environmentally friendly technology, the plant will support long-term sustainability and operational excellence.
A Legacy of Innovation Meets a Future of Opportunity
“Our new state-of-the-art facility will play a historic role in strengthening our nation’s fragile tin supply chain,” said Tyler Morris, VP and Partner at Nathan Trotter. “Henry County offers the skilled workforce and logistical advantages we need to succeed.”
Founded in 1789 and headquartered in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, Nathan Trotter operates four tin refining and finishing plants across the state. With over two centuries of experience, the company has evolved alongside the industrial revolution, world wars, and the digital age—meeting growing demand for tin in modern applications.
Local leaders praised the announcement as a win for the region:
- “Nathan Trotter’s decision affirms our strategy of preparing shovel-ready sites to attract world-class industry,” said Jim Adams, Chairman of the Henry County Board of Supervisors.
- “This great company knows where to get things done right—right here in Henry County,” said Senator Bill Stanley.
- “This is a win for national security, advanced manufacturing, and the hardworking people of our region,” said Delegate Eric Phillips.
Economic Development Support
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP), Henry County, and the Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development Corporation collaborated to secure the project. Governor Youngkin approved a $1.5 million grant from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund to assist with development.
Additionally, VEDP will support job creation through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program (VJIP), which provides funding and consultative services to help companies recruit and train new employees.
