LOS LUNAS, NM — Pacific Fusion, a commercial nuclear fusion energy company, is set to open a manufacturing facility in Los Lunas, New Mexico, by the end of 2025. The Los Lunas “build center” will be the company’s first facility in the state and will produce components for its larger $1 billion Research and Manufacturing Campus in Albuquerque’s Mesa del Sol.
The Los Lunas facility, located in the former Merillat cabinet factory in the Los Morros Business Park, will be instrumental in the development of Pacific Fusion’s demonstration system. This system is being designed to achieve “net facility gain” by 2030, which would generate more energy from a fusion reaction than the total energy consumed by the system.
The expansion marks a significant step forward for the company, which secured over $900 million in Series A funding in 2024. It also represents a major economic development win for New Mexico, which is solidifying its position as a hub for clean-tech innovation. The overall project, including the Los Lunas and Mesa del Sol facilities, is projected to have an economic impact of over $1.2 billion for the state over the next decade.
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham highlighted the project’s significance, stating that Pacific Fusion’s decision demonstrates New Mexico’s competitiveness in attracting innovative companies. She noted that the project will create jobs, expand the clean-tech economy, and position New Mexico as a leader in future industries.
New Mexico’s history of applied physics, including work at Sandia National Laboratories, supported the company’s location choice. Pacific Fusion intends to utilize the state’s skilled workforce and collaborate with local educational institutions like the University of New Mexico and Central New Mexico Community College to develop talent.
The Mesa del Sol campus is slated for construction in 2026, while the Los Lunas manufacturing facility is expected to begin operations by late 2025. The combined facilities are anticipated to create more than 200 long-term jobs.
