Global materials and surface technologies leader reinforces long-term commitment to Michigan with continued investment
LANSING, Mich. — Gretchen Whitmer today announced that OC Oerlikon, a global innovation leader in surface technologies and advanced materials, plans to expand its operations in Michigan to meet growing customer demand and strengthen its manufacturing footprint in the state.
The announcement underscores Michigan’s role as a hub for advanced manufacturing, defense, and high-tech materials production, and coincides with Governor Whitmer’s visit to Oerlikon’s Michigan operations.
“Michigan has always been home to cutting-edge research and innovation that drives our state forward and grows our economy,” said Governor Whitmer. “Today’s announcement sends a strong message that Michigan is the right place to grow manufacturing that supports our national defense and creates good-paying jobs. By building on our strengths in engineering, innovation, and skilled talent, we’re showing what’s possible when global companies choose to invest and expand in Michigan.”
Supporting Defense, Aerospace, and Advanced Manufacturing
Oerlikon’s existing facility in Plymouth specializes in the production of advanced powders and coating technologies used in critical defense and aerospace applications, including turbine engines and other high-performance systems essential to national security. The company’s planned expansion will support rising demand across defense, energy, aerospace, automotive, and additive manufacturing markets.
Headquartered in Pfäffikon, Switzerland, Oerlikon operates in 38 countries and employs approximately 9,500 people worldwide. The company focuses on improving performance, efficiency, and sustainability through advanced materials and surface technologies.
“Oerlikon’s Michigan operations are a cornerstone of our North American strategy,” said Michael Suess, Executive Chairman of Oerlikon. “Our ongoing commitment builds on the major investment we made in 2017 as we continue to strengthen our advanced materials capabilities to serve high-growth industries. We are also assessing additional expansion opportunities in the region to meet future customer needs.”
A Longstanding Presence in Michigan
Michigan has played a strategic role in Oerlikon’s North American growth for more than a decade. The company first established operations in Troy before expanding to its advanced materials and R&D center in Plymouth in 2018, consolidating operations while retaining and growing high-skilled jobs.
Today, Oerlikon employs nearly 300 workers across multiple Michigan locations, with average annual compensation and benefits approaching $100,000, reflecting the state’s strength in supporting high-wage, advanced manufacturing careers.
“Oerlikon’s continued investment reflects Michigan’s strength as a global hub for advanced manufacturing and defense innovation,” said Quentin L. Messer Jr., CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). “Michigan offers the talent, infrastructure, and global connectivity needed to aggressively scale sophisticated technologies. Given a world full of options, we’re proud Oerlikon continues to grow and make it in Michigan.”
Any potential state support associated with the expansion would be subject to review and approval by the Michigan Strategic Fund Board.
State leaders say Oerlikon’s planned investment highlights Michigan’s strong international relationships and its ability to attract and retain global companies seeking a stable, innovative environment for advanced manufacturing. As global demand for defense, energy, and high-performance materials continues to grow, Michigan remains focused on projects that strengthen supply chains, support national security, and create long-term economic opportunity for Michiganders.
