“Central PA is our heartland, and a key part of our growth strategy,” said Sean Mahoney, Director of Marketing for PhilaPort. “We want to help Central PA businesses better access global markets.”
With a strong manufacturing economy in Central Pennsylvania, within a 50-mile radius of Shamokin Dam in Snyder County Pennsylvania there are 62,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) moving on container ships imported or exported by US companies via an East Coast port in 2018. The product type is extremely diversified from furniture to food.
Located in the heart of the U.S. Northeast, PhilaPort is within easy reach of major retail distribution centers, manufacturers and automotive dealerships from New England to Virginia and west to Chicago, at the center of a unique transportation nexus. Two Class I railroads connect PhilaPort with destinations throughout North America. PhilaPort’s truck turn times average 40 minutes. More turn times per day is good for the trucker, the shipper and, of course, the consumer eager to purchase those goods. Activity at PhilaPort includes containers filled with everything from frozen beef from Australia to furniture made in Sweden; automobiles from South Korea; and cocoa beans from West Africa. It all comes up the Delaware River on its way to some of America’s largest and most prosperous markets. Meanwhile, American-made exports include industrial equipment, machinery, agricultural products, even computers and pharmaceuticals.
Underway at PhilaPort are significant upgrades, efficiency improvements and new services to support a thriving global economy. Total port and port-related infrastructure investments of over $1 billion includes five new giant cranes capable of unloading the world’s largest container ships, channel deepening, new warehousing, road and rail improvements, and more.
“The investment from PhilaPort is critical to the regional effort to spotlight the opportunities available in Central Pennsylvania to support smart, economic growth and investment projects. The central region provides a prime location matched with talent, infrastructure and quality of life. The investment from PhilaPort is invaluable for Central Pennsylvania’s marketing efforts to attract new jobs and capital investments to our region.” Lauren Bryson, Executive Director of Focus.
