Driving $349M in Investments and 240 New Jobs
SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (Sept. 25, 2025) – Lt. Gov. Joe Kelly and Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED) Interim Director Maureen Larsen this week recognized South Sioux City for its continued leadership in economic development, presenting the community with its recertification as an Economic Development Certified Community (EDCC).
With investments surpassing $349 million and 240 new jobs created since 2020, South Sioux City is proving itself a regional hub for growth. Recent milestones include the completion of a $62 million Wastewater Treatment Facility, certification as an Inland Port Authority in 2025, and expansions by local businesses supported through state funding programs.
“South Sioux City’s dedication to development is well-deserving of recognition,” said Lt. Gov. Joe Kelly. “From housing growth to industrial expansion, the city is removing barriers for investment and proving why Nebraska is a great place to do business.”
South Sioux City was among the first Nebraska communities to earn EDCC status in 2006 and has now been recertified in 2011, 2016, 2020, and 2025. The designation highlights the city’s ability to attract new industries and support local employers with shovel-ready sites, financing tools, and a pro-business climate.
Growth Across Housing, Infrastructure, and Industry
Local leaders are also investing heavily in housing and quality of life improvements. By 2028, the community expects to add 231 single-family homes and 480 multi-family units. Developments like the Missouri View Subdivision and Ogden Housing Development are already underway, supported by state housing funds.
Beyond housing, South Sioux City continues to prioritize infrastructure and community amenities. Recent projects include new bike trails, enhancements at local parks, a new YMCA Early Learning and Child Development Center adding 100 childcare slots, and the Siouxland Freedom Park Interpretive Center honoring veterans.
City Administrator Lance Hedquist emphasized the broader impact:
“From new housing and parks to our Inland Port Authority designation that opens 1,600 acres for development, we’re building a strong foundation for families and employers alike.”
Investing in Workforce Development
Education and training remain central to long-term growth. South Sioux City High School recently launched a career academy, and Northeast Community College completed a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training facility in 2024 to help meet transportation and logistics workforce demand.
Mayor Rod Koch underscored the city’s commitment:
“South Sioux City is, above all, a welcoming community where families can put down roots and thrive. With strong schools, quality jobs, and new housing, we’re creating a safe, vibrant place where every generation can proudly call home.”
About the Economic Development Certified Community Program
Sponsored by the Nebraska Diplomats and administered by DED, the EDCC program recognizes communities that demonstrate readiness for growth by preparing sites, infrastructure, and incentives to accelerate business investment. South Sioux City is one of 40 active EDCCs across the state, with 12 certified sites already selected by companies for new projects.
