US MgO has announced plans to build a new manufacturing facility for its innovative construction material products in Brunswick County, North Carolina, creating at least 35 new jobs and $5 million in new investments.
Following a public hearing at the regular board meeting Monday, April 7, the Brunswick County Board of Commissioners approved the sale of approximately 22 acres in the Leland Innovation Park to US MgO. The company intends to construct a 75,000-square foot facility to house operations for the manufacture of high-quality magnesium oxide (MgO) cement sheathing panels catering to the commercial, multifamily, and industrial construction markets in North America.
“After two years of research and development at our small facility in Leland, we’re thrilled to break ground on this major upgrade,” US MgO’s Ryan Miller said. “While MgO panels aren’t known to most folks, they are one of the construction industry’s most innovative building products. We’re excited to continue our growth in Brunswick County by building the nation’s first manufacturing facility for this product type.”
The company already has a local presence with research and development operations in Brunswick County and warehousing operations in Wilmington. US MgO was established in 2023 by a team of accomplished building products industry veterans and partners that boast decades of extensive experience in the development, research, and manufacturing of sheathing panels and innovative building products.
“Brunswick County is proud to support another exciting project that will further strengthen our local economy and provide new local jobs,” Brunswick County Chairman Mike Forte said. “We are so pleased to have US MgO expand their presence in our community, and we look forward to seeing their growth in the coming years.”
Brunswick Business & Industry (BBID), Brunswick County and company officials have been working diligently over the past 24 months to make sure that US MgO could use the county-owned property for its operations. The purchase includes multiple tracts with unique geographical challenges, according to BBID Board Chairman Allen Bryant.
“The property was difficult to develop, which is why we have been marketing for property for many years without success,” said Bryant. “Today represents the culmination of multiple efforts by many people, and we are so thankful that US MgO is able to utilize this property and create jobs and investment in our community.”
Brunswick County acquired the four parcels to be sold in the Leland Innovation Park from the now-dissolved Brunswick County Economic Development Commission. The new US MgO manufacturing facility posed a strong opportunity to fulfill the economic development purpose of the land. The probable estimated hourly wage for hourly employees is $52, inclusive of cash benefits such as overtime, vacation or other pay incentives.
Partners on this project with US MgO include the Brunswick County Board of Commissioners, Brunswick Business & Industry Development, Brunswick Community College, and North Carolina’s Southeast.
