Company to expand large-scale power transformer production to meet growing demand from utilities, data centers, and renewable energy markets
RINCON, Ga. (November 2025) — Virginia Transformer Corporation will invest $40 million to expand its Georgia Transformer manufacturing facility near Rincon in Effingham County, creating more than 400 new jobs and reinforcing Georgia’s growing energy infrastructure and advanced manufacturing sectors.
The announcement was made by Governor Brian P. Kemp, alongside state, regional, and company leaders.
“Along with state and local leaders in the coastal region, we’re proud to celebrate this major expansion and Virginia Transformer’s decision to double down on Georgia,” said Governor Brian Kemp. “We look forward to the impact their decision will have on the Rincon and Effingham County communities.”
Facility to Support Grid, Data Center, and Renewable Energy Growth
The 250,000-square-foot Rincon facility manufactures custom power transformers ranging from 30 MVA to 500 MVA at up to 525 kV, serving utilities, data centers, renewable energy developers, and industrial users. The expansion marks the latest investment at the site since Virginia Transformer acquired the facility in 2015.
“Virginia Transformer is the largest U.S.-owned producer of power transformers in North America, and we’ve been able to grow by delivering for customers,” said Prabhat Jain, CEO, Virginia Transformer. “This investment will underscore our ability to produce transformers with the shortest lead times in the industry—and we plan to continue growing to serve customer demand.”
Construction is expected to begin January 2026 at 2789 GA-21 in Effingham County.
Expansion Arrives During Regional Industrial Transition
Local leaders highlighted the project’s economic importance following recent mill closures and job losses in Southeast Georgia.
“This investment comes at a critical moment as our region continues to face the fallout of recent mill closures and the loss of good-paying jobs,” said Speaker Jon Burns. “We are grateful for Virginia Transformer’s commitment to expanding in Georgia and look forward to the new opportunities this project brings.”
Community Impact and Workforce Development
The expansion will support more than 800 retained jobs and introduce hundreds of new positions across operations, assembly, and maintenance.
“Virginia Transformer’s continued investment in Effingham County is a powerful endorsement of our skilled workforce and strategic location,” said Matt Saxon, Chairman, Effingham County Industrial Development Authority. “The creation of 400 new jobs represents a major milestone for our regional economy.”
“Effingham County continues to lead in advanced manufacturing and workforce development,” added District 5 Commissioner Phil Kieffer. “We commend both the company and the Industrial Development Authority for helping create an environment where companies can grow.”
State Partners and Project Support
The Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) supported the competitive project in collaboration with:
- Effingham County Industrial Development Authority
- Georgia Power
- Georgia Quick Start
- State and regional partners
“Demand for utility-scale and commercial-scale energy systems is at an all-time high,” said Pat Wilson, Commissioner, Georgia Department of Economic Development. “By supporting sectors that power the energy grid, we ensure businesses can grow and thrive across Georgia.”
