Made through Carbonyl Technology from Impure Feedstock
Westwin Elements Inc. (Westwin), United States’ first major nickel refinery, has successfully produced its first nickel powder using carbonyl refining technology at its demonstration plant in Lawton Fort-Sill, Oklahoma. Commissioned on September 30th, the facility is designed to produce 20 tons per year of Class 1 nickel powder. This plant demonstrates the carbonyl process—Westwin’s chosen refining technology—within the United States while providing product samples for customer qualification, research, development, and training.
“This milestone has been reached through the hard work and dedication of every member of Westwin’s operating and technical team. I am very proud of each and every one of them.” – John Shelegey, Westwin’s Chief Operating Officer.
Achieving nickel powder production establishes Westwin as the only domestic source of refined nickel, critical to U.s. industries such as stainless steel, aerospace, defense and electric vehicle batteries. This milestone supports Westwin’s mission to solve U.S. critical mineral supply challenges for national security and energy dominance objectives.
“I’m grateful for God’s provision and the dedication of the Westwin team, all to whom this achievement is a credit. The carbonyl process yields zero solid or liquid waste streams, allowing a cost competitive and clean operation. the first powder showcases America’s ability to independently produce critical minerals and not rely on foreign adversaries, all to support the imminent achievement of U.S. energy dominance.” – KaLeigh Long, Westwin’s CEO and Founder
Westwin is addressing the critical minerals crisis by reducing dependency on foreign entities of concern, decreasing forecasted global deficits and localizing nickel refining capabilities. As domestic nickel demand surges, Westwin is strategically positioned to supply Class 1 nickel at commercial scale to bridge market deficits. Westwin plans to break ground on its commercial facility in Q2 2025.
