To Advance Student Development and Regional Workforce
Westwin Elements, America’s first major nickel refinery, is pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Cameron University. This partnership aims to enhance educational experiences and professional development opportunities for students in the Department of Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering at Cameron University, fostering a stronger connection between academia and industry.
The MOU, effective immediately, establishes a collaborative framework between Westwin Elements and Cameron University. This initiative focuses on developing and engaging engineers, scientific technologists, and chemists to create job opportunities and further the field of carbonyl engineering and chemistry. Key elements of the partnership include mentorship programs, internship opportunities for classroom credit, and program development to support career paths in carbonyl refining.
Dr. Kyle Moore, Chair of the Department of Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering at Cameron University described the partnership by stating, “Cameron University is committed to leveraging our resources to enhance the experience of our students and faculty in innovative ways that bridge the gap between academia and industry. The Department of Chemistry, Physics and Engineering’s agreement with Westwin will provide CU students with new opportunities to utilize their classroom and laboratory knowledge in a professional, industry environment. Through this partnership, the two entities hope to serve not only each other, but help develop Lawton and southwest Oklahoma’s workforce as well.”
KaLeigh Long, CEO of Westwin Elements, highlighted the importance of this collaboration, saying, “Education and industry partnerships shape our future workforce. Westwin can develop a new generation of technical experts, engineers and chemists, with Cameron University to pioneer the onshoring of critical minerals, an effort that is vital to US’ national security, energy, environmental and economic interests. The Westwin and Cameron University partnership develops generational technical opportunity and expertise in Lawton, Oklahoma. My team and I celebrate the progress ahead.”
The MOU outlines a shared vision to enhance student development through practical, hands-on experiences that bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications. Both Westwin Elements and Cameron University are committed to providing students with the skills and opportunities needed to succeed in the competitive fields of engineering and chemistry.
