Creating Over 100 New Jobs
RICHMOND, VA — September 16, 2025 — ABB, a global leader in electrification and automation technologies, has announced a major expansion of its Henrico County facility, investing $28.5 million and creating more than 100 new jobs over the next three years. The announcement was made by Governor Glenn Youngkin, alongside state and local officials, marking a significant milestone in Virginia’s advanced manufacturing and clean energy sectors.
Headquartered in Switzerland, ABB operates more than 170 manufacturing facilities worldwide, including nearly 40 sites across 20 U.S. states. The Henrico County facility, established in 1968, currently employs 184 Virginians and produces power distribution units and static transfer switches that support critical infrastructure in data centers, hospitals, and manufacturing plants.
“ABB’s decision to invest again in Henrico County doubles down on nearly 60 years of success here in Virginia,” said Governor Youngkin. “Together, we’re powering the future and meeting America’s energy needs with the groundbreaking work ABB is leading right here in Henrico.”
Expansion Highlights
The investment will fund:
- A new test center, warehouse, and assembly lines
- Increased production capacity to meet rising demand for advanced electrification solutions
- Enhanced customer service capabilities for U.S. markets
“ABB is energizing the economy of Henrico County with over 100 new jobs and $28.5 million in new investments,” said Secretary of Commerce and Trade Juan Pablo Segura. “Their work is vital to America’s energy infrastructure.”
“This expansion reflects our commitment to U.S. manufacturing and our customers’ goals of improving energy efficiency and uptime,” added Franklin Sullivan, ABB Electrification SVP of Industry Partnerships.
Local Impact
The Henrico facility produces approximately 2,500 units annually, protecting key systems such as servers, MRI machines, and production lines from electrical failures. The expansion reinforces ABB’s long-standing presence in the region and its role in supporting innovation, sustainability, and economic growth.
“ABB has been a valued part of our community for nearly 60 years,” said Edward S. Whitlock III, Chairman of the Henrico EDA Board. “Their continued investment underscores their confidence in Henrico and our shared values.”
“This is a tremendous win for our region and the Commonwealth,” said Senator Lashrecse Aird. “It solidifies Virginia’s leadership in advanced manufacturing and clean energy innovation.”
State Support & Workforce Development
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) collaborated with Henrico County to secure the project. Governor Youngkin approved a $300,000 grant from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund to support the expansion.
VEDP will also assist ABB through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program (VJIP), which provides funding and consultative services to support employee recruitment and training. VJIP is a state-funded initiative designed to reduce HR costs for expanding companies and enhance job opportunities for Virginians.
“This investment reflects the incredible potential of our region and its people,” said Delegate Delores McQuinn. “ABB’s commitment to innovation and sustainability aligns perfectly with our vision for economic growth.”
