RICHMOND, Va. — Blue Sky Innovators LLC is expanding its Northern Virginia footprint with a $7 million investment in Reston, creating 175 new jobs and reinforcing the region’s position as a national hub for defense and advanced technology innovation.
The company will develop approximately 20,000 square feet of new space above its existing Fairfax County office to house “SkyLab,” a secure, modular innovation environment designed to support agile collaboration with government partners. The facility will function as a software innovation laboratory focused on accelerating mission-critical technologies in a secure setting.
State leaders say the project underscores Virginia’s competitive advantage in defense, intelligence and emerging technologies.
“Blue Sky Innovators’ expansion highlights the Commonwealth’s ability to attract and grow companies operating at the forefront of national security and innovation,” said Governor Abigail Spanberger. “With access to top-tier talent and proximity to key federal decision-makers, Northern Virginia continues to lead in the evolving defense technology landscape.”
The new SkyLab facility is designed to integrate speed, security and collaboration—three critical components in addressing modern national security challenges. Company leadership noted that the investment will enhance its ability to deliver advanced solutions at the point of mission execution while strengthening partnerships across government and industry.
Blue Sky Innovators provides advanced technologies and operational insights to government and commercial clients, with capabilities spanning research and development, prototyping, electromagnetic spectrum operations and systems integration. The company operates across multiple states and maintains strong ties to the federal defense and intelligence communities.
Regional and local stakeholders emphasized the broader economic and innovation impact of the expansion, citing the project’s role in strengthening Northern Virginia’s technology ecosystem and supporting continued growth in high-wage, high-skill employment.
The project was secured through collaboration between the Virginia Economic Development Partnership and the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority. The Commonwealth approved an $840,000 grant from its Opportunity Fund to support the expansion, while workforce training assistance will be provided through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program.
With construction underway, the SkyLab initiative is expected to accelerate innovation pipelines, enhance cross-sector collaboration and further solidify Northern Virginia’s role as a critical center for defense technology advancement.
