GREER, S.C. — South Carolina Ports’ Inland Port Greer continues to demonstrate the value of short-haul intermodal logistics, providing shippers with fast, reliable connections between inland markets and the Port of Charleston. Following a record-setting 2025 with nearly 200,000 rail moves, the facility has solidified its role as a leading high-volume inland port in the Southeast.
Positioned along the high-traffic I-85 corridor between Atlanta and Charlotte, Inland Port Greer gives cargo owners direct access to one of the nation’s fastest-growing population and manufacturing regions. From the facility, businesses can reach approximately 94 million consumers within a one-day truck drive.
Designed for modern supply chain performance, the inland port offers 11-minute average turn times, 24/7 gate availability, and overnight rail service to Charleston six days a week through Norfolk Southern. These capabilities support time-sensitive cargo, just-in-time inventory strategies and import/export operations seeking greater speed and flexibility.
Since opening in 2013, Inland Port Greer has experienced significant growth. Initially anchored by advanced manufacturers in the Upstate region, the facility quickly expanded to serve major retailers, consumer goods companies and diversified industrial users. During its first decade of operation, Greer posted average annual growth of 13 percent.
Today, the inland port serves more than 150 customers across the Southeast, while strong export volumes help create balanced cargo flows for ocean carriers calling the Port of Charleston.
“What began as a strategic investment for key local clients 13 years ago has grown into a critical asset for the entire Southeastern supply chain,” said SC Ports President and CEO Micah Mallace.
To accommodate continued demand, SC Ports recently completed a $55 million expansion at Inland Port Greer, increasing annual rail lift capacity to 300,000 moves. Improvements include a 50 percent larger container yard, an expanded chassis lot, and 9,000 feet of additional rail to efficiently handle longer trains.
The Greer-to-Charleston corridor is now one of the largest international intermodal lanes within Norfolk Southern’s network.
Norfolk Southern Vice President Intermodal Automotive Shawn Tureman said the partnership continues to deliver important benefits to regional shippers.
“Our overnight rail service and the scale of this intermodal corridor give cargo owners in the Southeast the speed, reliability and flexibility they need to compete, while also delivering meaningful environmental benefits by shifting freight from highway to rail,” Tureman said.
Mallace said Inland Port Greer remains focused on dependable service and tailored logistics solutions for customers navigating increasingly complex supply chains.
“Businesses have long depended on SC Ports and Inland Port Greer to meet their most time-sensitive needs,” Mallace said. “By providing 24/7 service and swift rail connections to the Port of Charleston, we continue to deliver the competitiveness and reliability our customers expect.”
