Veteran economic development leader to oversee international and domestic business recruitment
COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Commerce has announced the promotion of Julie Kunkle to director of global business development, a role in which she will lead the state’s domestic and international business recruitment strategy.
Kunkle brings nearly 30 years of experience across the public and private sectors, with a career focused on business development, strategic growth, and organizational leadership during periods of significant market transformation. Since joining S.C. Commerce in 2020, she has played a key role in advancing the state’s competitiveness, most recently serving as deputy director within the Business Services division.
In that role, Kunkle focused on strengthening South Carolina’s economic advancement initiatives by supporting innovation, expanding strategic partnerships, and enhancing services for both existing industries and prospective investors. Her promotion reflects the department’s continued emphasis on aligning traditional economic development with innovation-driven growth.
Kunkle’s career began in sales and marketing with global organizations such as Unilever and Gannett before transitioning into the technology sector during the early internet era. At AOL, she held senior leadership positions in sales strategy, account management, and program development, helping translate emerging digital platforms into scalable commercial solutions.
Her public-sector experience includes leading statewide initiatives designed to strengthen South Carolina’s innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, working collaboratively with partners across government, industry, higher education, and nonprofit organizations. This cross-sector background positions Kunkle to further integrate talent, infrastructure, and innovation into the state’s global business recruitment efforts.
“South Carolina has a proven track record of helping companies succeed from launch to legacy,” said Harry M. Lightsey III, Secretary of Commerce. “Julie Kunkle’s forward-looking, execution-driven approach will ensure that S.C. Commerce continues to attract and retain investment opportunities that benefit communities across the state.”
