Company commits $1.5 million+ per phase to community initiatives and workforce development in Lebanon
LEBANON, Ind. — Indiana Governor Mike Braun joined executives from Meta Platforms Inc. as the company officially broke ground on a more than $10 billion, state-of-the-art data center campus at the LEAP Innovation and Research District in Lebanon, marking one of the largest technology investments in Indiana history.
The project is expected to create approximately 300 high-wage permanent jobs and support more than 4,000 construction jobs at peak, delivering a significant boost to Boone County’s economy. In addition to job creation, the development will expand local and state tax bases while supporting area schools and nonprofit organizations through Meta’s community grant programs.
“Indiana has the business-first environment and central location needed to support the global infrastructure of tomorrow’s economy,” said Gov. Braun. “Meta’s significant investment is a testament to our skilled workforce and to the strength of our communities. This project will power innovation and opportunity in Lebanon and across Indiana.”
A Major AI and Technology Infrastructure Investment
Meta will invest over $10 billion in multiple phases to develop a 1,500-acre campus featuring 13 buildings, including:
- 10 data center facilities
- Logistics and warehousing space
- Network and administrative support facilities
The campus will serve as a critical hub in Meta’s global infrastructure network, supporting next-generation technologies and artificial intelligence applications.
“At Meta, we’re building the infrastructure that will power the next generation of AI technology, and Lebanon is now at the heart of that effort,” said Rachel Peterson, Vice President of Data Centers at Meta. “This is one of our largest investments to date and an important milestone in our AI ambitions. We’re proud to deepen our commitment to Indiana while creating local jobs and driving meaningful community impact.”
Information on construction and employment opportunities will be made available through the company’s hiring and contractor channels as development progresses.
Community Investment and Workforce Support
Meta announced several community-focused initiatives tied to the project, including:
- An annual community impact payment of $1.5 million to the City of Lebanon for each completed phase (up to six phases)
- Funding for local workforce development and career exploration programs
- An annual grants program supporting technology-driven community projects
These funds will support quality-of-place investments, placemaking initiatives, and talent pipeline development in the region.
Strengthening the LEAP District’s Momentum
Since 2022, the LEAP Innovation and Research District has secured more than $23 billion in committed investment, positioning it as one of the Midwest’s premier megasites for high-growth industries including:
- Advanced manufacturing
- Life sciences and pharmaceuticals
- Technology and AI infrastructure
- Research and innovation-driven enterprises
Lebanon Mayor Matt Gentry emphasized the strategic importance of the project.
“By choosing Lebanon, Meta is investing not only in our community but in the digital infrastructure that powers the modern world,” Gentry said. “Data centers are the backbone of national security, innovation and global competitiveness. This investment strengthens our tax base, supports long-term growth and allows us to invest in our city’s future while keeping the tax burden low for residents.”
Performance-Based Incentives
The Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) approved a performance-based incentive package tied to capital investment and job creation. This includes:
- A 35-year data center sales tax exemption tied to at least $1 billion in eligible capital investment within six years
- Additional five-year exemption periods for subsequent investment thresholds
- Potential eligibility for incentives for up to 50 years
All incentives are contingent upon the company meeting investment and employment commitments.
Expanding Meta’s Indiana Footprint
The Lebanon campus represents Meta’s second major data center investment in Indiana, joining its $800 million, 700,000-square-foot Jeffersonville data center, which is nearing completion.
Together, these projects reinforce Indiana’s growing role as a national leader in data infrastructure, AI enablement and digital economy growth.
