Outdoor Equity Fund connects more than 22,000 youth to programs across 14 counties
SANTA FE, N.M. — New Mexico is investing $1.9 million to expand youth access to outdoor recreation and workforce development programs through its Outdoor Equity Fund, supporting 62 initiatives that will serve more than 22,000 young people statewide.
The funding reflects growing demand for outdoor programming, with applications for FY2026 increasing 141% year-over-year. A total of 228 organizations requested $7.8 million in funding, significantly exceeding the $4 million available.
State leaders say the program is playing a dual role—expanding access to outdoor experiences while building a talent pipeline for New Mexico’s growing outdoor recreation economy.
“This investment in our youth is further strengthened by nearly $2 million in matching funds from grant recipients,” said Economic Development Department Cabinet Secretary Rob Black. “These programs are helping prepare the next generation with the skills and experiences needed to support one of our fastest-growing industries.”
Expanding Access Across Communities
The latest round of funding prioritizes equitable access, with approximately half of the supported programs serving youth in rural and Tribal communities. The initiative continues to focus on removing barriers to outdoor participation, particularly for underserved populations.
Beyond recreation, many programs are designed to deliver career-connected experiences:
- 34 programs include workforce development components
- 23 programs offer paid opportunities for participants
“These investments are opening doors for young people across New Mexico,” said Outdoor Recreation Division Director Karina Armijo. “They’re building connections to the outdoors, strengthening communities, and creating pathways to future careers.”
Local program leaders also emphasize the broader social benefits, including reducing screen time and encouraging healthier lifestyles through outdoor engagement.
Building a National Model
Since its launch in 2019 under Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, the Outdoor Equity Fund has awarded more than $10.5 million in grants, connecting approximately 128,000 youth to outdoor education and recreation experiences.
The program was the first of its kind in the nation, designed specifically to expand equitable access to outdoor opportunities for young people from low-income and underserved communities.
Looking Ahead
The next round of Outdoor Equity Fund applications will open July 1, 2026, with a second funding cycle scheduled for February 2027.
As demand continues to outpace available funding, state officials view the program as a critical tool for both workforce development and long-term economic growth tied to outdoor recreation.
