Indiana manufacturing project will increase production of steel utility structures supporting electric grid modernization
INDIANAPOLIS (November 6, 2026) — Nucor Corporation plans to invest $105 million to expand its Towers & Structures manufacturing facility in Crawfordsville, Indiana, creating up to 100 new jobs by the end of 2029.
The Montgomery County expansion will increase production of engineered utility structures used in electric grid modernization, renewable energy projects and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
Crawfordsville Facility to Add 125,000 Square Feet
Nucor will add approximately 125,000 square feet to its existing facility on a roughly 180-acre site. The Towers & Structures operation began production in 2025.
The expansion will incorporate automation, efficient straight-line production and advanced hot-dip galvanizing operations consistent with the original facility. These capabilities will help the company meet demand from electric utilities investing in grid reliability and additional power generation.
Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027, with hiring scheduled to start in mid-2027. The new positions will add to the operation’s existing team of 328 Indiana employees.
Average salaries for the new jobs are expected to be nearly 150% of the Montgomery County average.
Investment Supports Growing Electricity Infrastructure Needs
Nucor Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Leon Topalian said the expansion will help meet strong demand for utility poles and related infrastructure as electric utilities modernize the grid and expand generation to address growing national power needs.
Topalian credited support from Gov. Mike Braun, the Indiana Office of Commerce, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation and Montgomery County officials.
Gov. Braun said the project will strengthen Indiana’s advanced manufacturing sector while creating additional high-paying career opportunities.
Five Indiana Projects Total $597.5 Million
The Crawfordsville expansion marks Nucor’s fifth major Indiana investment in recent years. Together, the projects represent $597.5 million in investment and approximately 400 new jobs.
The investments include:
- Crawfordsville Towers & Structures: An initial $115 million facility investment announced in 2023.
- Crawfordsville sheet mill: A $290 million modernization investment announced in 2022.
- Waterloo: A $28.5 million insulated metal panel production facility beside the existing Nucor Building Systems Indiana campus.
- St. Joe: A $59 million investment in the company’s Vulcraft division announced in August.
- Crawfordsville expansion: The newly announced $105 million Towers & Structures project.
Indiana Secretary of Commerce Chuck Goodrich said Nucor’s continued growth reflects the capabilities of the state’s workforce and the strength of its business environment.
Nucor Builds on Longstanding Indiana Presence
Nucor employs more than 2,600 people across more than a dozen Indiana locations. Its presence includes Nucor Steel Indiana, which launched in 1989 as the company’s first sheet steel mill.
The company established its Towers & Structures business unit in 2022 to serve the utility infrastructure market.
The planned Crawfordsville expansion remains subject to finalization of local incentives under consideration by Montgomery County.
