Nation’s First Privately Funded Nuclear Fuel Recycling Facility to Create 800+ Jobs
Oak Ridge, TN — September 4, 2025 — Oklo Inc., a pioneering advanced nuclear technology company, has announced plans to establish a $1.7 billion Advanced Fuel Center in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The project will create more than 800 high-skill jobs and introduce the nation’s first privately funded nuclear fuel recycling facility—marking a historic leap forward in America’s energy independence and clean technology leadership.
Located on a 247-acre site at the Oak Ridge Heritage Center, the facility will recycle used nuclear fuel from today’s operating fleet, providing a durable domestic supply for next-generation reactors. The announcement underscores Tennessee’s emergence as a national hub for nuclear innovation, supported by strategic investments and a robust talent pipeline.
“Oklo’s recognition of our strong business climate, reliable infrastructure, and skilled workforce proves Tennessee is ready to lead the future of nuclear energy,” said Governor Bill Lee. “This landmark investment will increase America’s energy independence and create greater opportunity for all Tennesseans.”
The project is supported by Tennessee’s Nuclear Energy Fund, a $50 million initiative launched in the 2023–2024 state budget and expanded with an additional $40 million over the past two legislative sessions. Oklo is the fifth company to leverage the fund, which supports nuclear-related business growth and strengthens university-led education and research programs across the state.
“With assets like Oak Ridge National Laboratory and a rich history in nuclear innovation, Tennessee is the ideal location for Oklo’s expansion,” said TNECD Commissioner Stuart C. McWhorter. “We’re proud to welcome Oklo to the Tennessee family.”
Oklo’s Advanced Fuel Center will anchor a new supply chain for advanced nuclear fuels, supporting industries from AI infrastructure to manufacturing and defense.
“We’re proud to make this commitment in Tennessee,” said Jacob DeWitte, Co-founder and CEO of Oklo. “By recycling used fuel, we’re building the foundation for the next generation of nuclear technology and creating durable jobs for decades to come.”
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) also voiced strong support for the project, citing its alignment with the state’s energy and economic development goals.
“Tennessee is the core of America’s nuclear renaissance,” said Don Moul, President and CEO of TVA. “Oklo’s announcement ensures these technologies are built and developed right here in our backyard.”
The project was vetted and recommended by the Education and Workforce subgroup of the Tennessee Nuclear Energy Advisory Council, a 22-member body guiding the state’s nuclear strategy.
