Next-generation maritime manufacturing project is expected to create more than 10,000 direct jobs and generate billions in economic impact
BROWNSVILLE, Texas — July 20, 2026 — Saronic Technologies has selected the Port of Brownsville as the location for Port Alpha, a $3.2 billion next-generation shipyard expected to create more than 10,000 direct jobs in the Rio Grande Valley.
Announced by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Port Alpha represents one of the largest economic development projects in the history of the Rio Grande Valley and the State of Texas. The investment reinforces the Port of Brownsville’s longstanding role in America’s maritime manufacturing and shipbuilding industries.
In addition to creating thousands of direct jobs, the project is projected to generate more than $160 billion in economic impact for Cameron County and approximately $264.5 billion statewide.

The project is expected to create specialized employment opportunities for welders, engineers, advanced manufacturing technicians and other skilled professionals.
Next-Generation Shipbuilding Campus Planned
Port Alpha will initially encompass approximately 835 acres and include a shipyard and advanced manufacturing facility. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, allowing the project to expand alongside production demand.
Operations are expected to begin in 2028.
At full build-out, the development could expand to nearly 4,400 acres. The facility will initially be capable of manufacturing vessels up to 850 feet long, with future site expansions potentially supporting vessels exceeding 1,200 feet.

Project Expected to Transform Regional Economy
Brownsville Navigation District Chairman Sergio Tito Lopez said Saronic’s selection demonstrates the strength of the port and the surrounding community.
“As the only deepwater seaport on the U.S.-Mexico border, the Port of Brownsville has long been a strategic hub for industry and shipbuilding,” Lopez said. “We are proud to welcome Saronic Technologies and the transformative opportunities Port Alpha will bring to our region.”
Lopez thanked Abbott and recognized the contributions of Cameron County, the Greater Brownsville Economic Development Corporation and Point Isabel Independent School District in securing the project.
“Saronic’s decision to invest in Brownsville reflects the strength of our community, our workforce and our shared commitment to advancing American manufacturing,” he said.
BND Vice Chairman Ernesto Gutierrez said the project’s impact will extend well beyond the Rio Grande Valley.
“Reaching this milestone took careful groundwork, and the payoff extends far beyond the Rio Grande Valley,” Gutierrez said. “This is a project with global reach. Creating strong career opportunities for local families is the defining mission of the Port of Brownsville.”
Gutierrez added that the project’s more than 10,000 jobs will create significant new career opportunities for the regional workforce.
Supporting National Defense and Workforce Development
BND Secretary John Reed said the partnership combines strategic economic development with national defense and workforce objectives.
“What we’re announcing today reflects strategic economic planning,” Reed said. “Teaming up with Saronic allows us to strengthen national defense capabilities while growing a highly skilled manufacturing workforce right here in Brownsville.”
Continuing a 50-Year Shipbuilding Legacy
The Port of Brownsville’s shipbuilding history spans more than five decades.
The port’s maritime manufacturing legacy began with Marathon LeTourneau’s shipyard during the early 1970s. It continued through Keppel AmFELS, which operated for more than three decades as one of the region’s leading shipbuilders, and later through Seatrium before the facility’s 2025 transition to Karpowership.
“Over five decades, the Port of Brownsville has helped shape nearly every major chapter in America’s maritime manufacturing story, standing as a launching pad for bold ideas that pushed our nation forward,” BND Commissioner David A. Garcia said.
Garcia said Saronic’s investment extends that history and begins another important chapter for the port.
Strategic Location Supports Industrial Growth
BND Commissioner Luis H. Villarreal Jr. said the port’s geography has helped create an ecosystem where multiple high-growth industries can operate together.
“Geographically and economically, the Port of Brownsville is a place where the space, energy, advanced manufacturing and shipbuilding industries converge to create an ecosystem for innovation and growth,” Villarreal said.
“Saronic’s investment strengthens that ecosystem, reinforcing the Port of Brownsville as a destination for transformative industries and creating new opportunities for the Rio Grande Valley, Texas and the nation’s maritime future.”

Port Director and CEO William Dietrich said the project reflects the port’s commitment to regional growth supported by strong partnerships between business and education.
“Today reinforces the Port of Brownsville’s ongoing investment in regional growth,” Dietrich said. “Made possible by strong ties between the business and education communities, this milestone is just the beginning of what’s ahead—growth we intend to pursue while protecting our environment and waterways for generations to come.”
Dietrich added that port officials appreciate Saronic’s confidence in Brownsville and look forward to the partnership’s next phase.
