The Wilmington Air Park is a successful place for aviation.
Barnstormers. Fledgling Civil Aeronautics. Army Air Corps. Glider research pilots. Experimental all-weather aviation explorers. Strategic Air Command personnel. Early aviation freight haulers. Just-in-time ad-hoc cargo flights. Global freight forwarders. UAS 1.0 operators. MRO operators with multiple STCs. Back-shop component overhaul expertise. Test and trial aviation operations. E-Commerce giants.
For nearly a century, all of these aviation operations, and more, have found a home at the Wilmington Air Park. In the last 13 years, the Port Authority, owner of the Wilmington Air Park, has continued to see growth, change and increased aviation activity.
THE WILMINGTON AIR PARK
Flights from the Wilmington Air Park can reach nearly 60 percent of the United States population within an hour. Businesses at the Air Park draw employees from three metropolitan areas within less than an hour’s commute. A four-lane, limited access highway provides direct connection from the Air Park to the interstate highway system.
“The Wilmington Air Park provides a reliable 24-7 multimodal logistics hub for our tenants and continues to be relied upon as a relief valve for supply chain challenges,” said T. Alex Beres, Executive Director at the Clinton County Port Authority.
BUSINESS SERVICES
The Air Park has two runways in its footprint – one at 10,701 feet and the other at 9,000 feet – and maintains its Part 139 FAA certification. Add to that over 250 acres of paved apron space, a category III ILS capability, split Class D airspace to accommodate simultaneous crewed and uncrewed operations and the value is compounded.
The largest owner and operator of converted Boeing 767 freighter aircraft is headquartered at the Wilmington Air Park – Air Transport Services Group, Inc. (ATSG). To maintain its fleet, it operates a Part 145 FAA Certified Repair Station out of four large aircraft maintenance hangars and a 100,000-square-foot component overhaul shop. Two airlines, ABX Air and Air Transport International, are headquartered at the Wilmington Air Park, complete with state-of-the-art simulators and training aids. The newest aviation operation at the Wilmington Air Park is a joint venture between GA Telesis and ATSG, to operate a Specialized Procedures Aeroengine Hospital (SPAH). It will be the first operation of this type in the region.
CARGO OPERATIONS
The Wilmington Air Park is the highest volume cargo airport in Ohio, and ranked 24th in the U. S., and home to scheduled flights from several cargo airlines to service an overnight cargo and fulfillment operation. Over 551 million pounds of freight traveled through the airport in the last 12 months. A recent study isolating cargo-focused airports ranked the Wilmington Air Park third in the United States for cargo volume.
Millions of dollars have been invested in aviation infrastructure at the Wilmington Air Park over the past five years. These investments have included new Instrument Landing System equipment and equipment upgrades, runway and taxiway repairs and panel replacements, additional rolling stock, and facility improvements. Further investments in aviation and logistics-related infrastructure are currently underway.
A 250-acre development site at the Wilmington Air Park is gaining the attention of businesses wanting airport access. Utilities are available on site for the existing facilities with capacity available for the development site. Due diligence has been completed on the site to ensure it is development ready. The Wilmington Air Park enjoys the advantages of being in a Foreign Trade Zone, a Federal Opportunity Zone, and has access to state and local property and sales tax exemptions.
