SHOALS, Ala. (Mar. 10, 2026) — Northwest Alabama could soon become a major center for defense manufacturing as plans move forward for a large-scale submarine components production facility expected to create up to 1,500 jobs in the Shoals region.
The project would redevelop the former Barton Railcar facility at Barton Riverfront Industrial Park, transforming the site into a 2.2-million-square-foot advanced manufacturing campus supporting submarine construction and the U.S. defense industrial base.
The development is expected to represent an investment of approximately $2 billion, positioning the Shoals area as an emerging hub for naval manufacturing and advanced industrial production.
Once operational, the facility is anticipated to manufacture critical components used in submarine construction, strengthening domestic production capacity for the U.S. Navy while creating high-quality jobs across Northwest Alabama.
Local and federal leaders say the project reflects growing national demand to expand the country’s submarine manufacturing supply chain while revitalizing key industrial sites.
The Shoals region offers several advantages for large-scale defense manufacturing projects, including river access, available industrial land, strong energy infrastructure through the Tennessee Valley Authority, and a skilled regional workforce.
The redevelopment of the Barton Riverfront Industrial Park would mark one of the largest industrial investments in Northwest Alabama in decades and could catalyze additional growth across surrounding counties.
Officials say additional details about the project, including construction timelines and specific manufacturing partners, are expected to be announced in the coming months.
If fully realized, the facility could establish the Shoals region as a key node in the nation’s submarine manufacturing supply chain, further expanding Alabama’s growing defense and advanced manufacturing sector.
