The Trump Administration, through the Department of the Interior, has allocated $11 million in fiscal year 2025 funding to Alabama as part of the Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization Program.
This initiative, aimed at transforming legacy coal mining sites into hubs of economic growth, supports President Trump’s commitment to American Energy Dominance, environmental stewardship, and economic renewal in coal communities.
The funding, administered by the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE), will address hazardous conditions at abandoned mine sites, such as unstable highwalls, mine fires, and polluted waterways, while unlocking the economic potential of these lands for new development. This grant is part of a broader $130 million investment in the Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization Program and over $119 million in reclamation fee-based grants for eligible states and tribes in fiscal year 2025.
“These grants reflect our ongoing commitment to the people and places that have powered this country for generations,” said Acting Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management Adam Suess. “We’re proud to work alongside states like Alabama to turn legacy mining sites into new opportunities for growth and prosperity.”
The investment will enhance public safety, support local economies, and enable Alabama’s coalfield communities to repurpose former mine lands for sustainable uses, fostering job creation and long-term economic development.
