$63 million in new facilities strengthen academic excellence, research capabilities, and student experience at the University of Alabama in Huntsville
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — November 13, 2025 — The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) announced the launch of two major capital projects following approval from the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees. The initiatives include the full renovation of the Bevill Center to establish a new Center for Cybersecurity Research, Education & Advanced Training, and the construction of a modern Track & Field Complex that will enhance athletic programming and student recruitment.
UAH Launches $47.7 Million Renovation for New Center for Cybersecurity
The university is moving forward with a comprehensive renovation of the 93,600-square-foot Bevill Center, originally built in 1988 as a hotel and conference center. The updated facility will serve as the new Center for Cybersecurity Research & Education, positioning UAH as an even stronger national leader in cyber innovation and workforce development.
The facility will also house the Department of Computer Science, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the Office of Research and Economic Development, creating a centralized hub for interdisciplinary research and advanced training.
The cybersecurity center project carries a $47.7 million budget, with McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture leading design efforts.
“The new Center for Cybersecurity will strengthen UAH’s position as a national leader in cyber research,” said Kristy Lee, UAH Chief Administrative Officer. “These projects represent significant investments in UAH’s future and reaffirm our commitment to advancing both academic excellence and the student experience.”
UAH to Construct New $15.5 Million Track & Field Complex
The Board of Trustees also approved a state-of-the-art Track & Field Complex, representing an investment of $15.49 million. UAH has awarded Dunlap Contracting Inc., of Lacey’s Spring, a contract totaling $5,115,150 for construction of the track, infield, and lighting.
The new facility will feature:
- NCAA-compliant 400-meter, 8-lane track
- Dedicated jumping, vaulting, and throwing areas
- 500-seat main bleacher section
- Entry plaza and dedicated parking for visiting teams
- Press box
- Home and visiting locker rooms
- Concessions
- Field house with storage and equipment areas
Once complete, the complex will allow UAH to host on-campus athletic events, including Gulf South Conference and NCAA Division II championships, enhancing recruitment opportunities and strengthening Charger athletics.
“The Track and Field Complex will enrich campus life and elevate our athletics program,” Lee added. “It supports our vision of creating world-class academic and athletic experiences for current and future students.”
Driving Growth in Alabama’s Innovation Corridor
The two projects—totaling more than $63 million in investment—underscore UAH’s continued momentum within Alabama’s expanding innovation ecosystem. As Huntsville remains one of the nation’s fastest-growing technology and research hubs, these new facilities will help support talent development, cutting-edge research, and vibrant student engagement.
